A place for us to gather around the campfire with our +1 steins of mead and tell tales of strange/funny/memorable things that have happened to us whilst playing RPG's. I'll share the first and last story I have about DS dross Children Of Mana.

Children Of Mana tale; spoilered up for length:

Your story reminds me of some of the Monster Hunter sessions I had with the GNamer boys...

I'll have a think, RPGs are not my most-played genre but I'm sure I'll have a few memories in the ol' noggin somewhere.

Most of your favourite games are RPGs though Drunka, I guess last night on Persona 4 Golden I some how missed the mid dungeon boss in a puzzle that I had to back track a few floors.

While it's fun to smash a low level monster in minutes part of me kind of feels bad that you didn't get to experience said monsters with everyone having appropriate gear.

I would usually change my armour, though that only impacts the damage I take not what I dish out.

I'll always remember the first time I blasted through the end area of The World Ends With You. It's such an oddly calm area despite it being the endgame area, and the boss fights are something to remember. Ahhh, now I want to replay it again. Laughing

Kinda. Both Dark Souls and Mass Effect are technically RPGs, but feel more like Metroidvanias and shooters respectively. Pokémon is an RPG but feels like its own thing, and Monster Hunter is similarly unique. I have played through Dragon Age and Xenoblade, though.

But we go of the Wiki for games in genre and all of those would come up as RPG, out all of those Pokemon is the most JRPG out of anything some how it feels unique but if you break it down it's the blueprint to a JRPG.

No as I still say Zelda is a Action-RPG but not to confuse things if there is ever any votes or even something like 20 questions if you ask the genre, it's Wiki.

Genre debates.

Back to RPG stories, I think one I'll always remember is the first time I used Auron's second Overdrive in Final Fantasy X. It. Is. Ridiculous.

Just spent a few hours on Fallout New Vegas and it was brilliant butfrustrating. Cleared out a large building of soldiers only to get to the end of the mission (which was to power on a generator - fun!) and it turns out you need to have 30 skill points for "Repair" to actually do it. Very annoying and a poor bit of game design. Obviously I can come back later and just fix it immediately given the path is now clear (ignoring the dead bodies, natch).

And then, after a tense stand off with various INVISIBLE ogre-like things with large clubs, I get to rescue a scientist in a research lab only FOR THE GAME TO CRASH. I really want to play this game but it's testing my patience.

Anyway, the point of this post. I noticed that I was shooting human enemies (as well as the monsters), but not the dogs. Dogs were deemed a waste of ammo (as they are quite weak) so I'd resort to the machete. Suddenly the game became Mortal Kombat where I was finishing off enemies excessively. Now, I know this is a video game, but while I was doing the right thing in terms of saving ammo, it did unsettle me. The fact I made my character a cannibal who eats his victims too, no that's fine. But putting the gun away to start hacking dogs heads off, that's a bit much. I guess that's something most players do in RPGs (kill the enemy with 1HP using a weak weapon), but it rarely involves machetes and dogs.
