What is GNU social?
Basically it's an alternative to Twitter which isn't controlled by a centralised capitalist system and is instead a federal operation.

What's the 'instance' system about and what does each offered?
There's many instances all for different people and uses, all instances can communicate with one another so someone on Shitposter Club could talk to someone on GNUTan for example thanks to the system. It also means a government can't censor anything because there's more than one database.
Also they all have different aspects one might allow more than 140 characters (the one I use allows 500) or it might restrict/allow certain features and things like that.


Where are you, Cammy?

I'm on the GNUsocial.net instance as @cammy although I used to be on the Quitter.se one which is the most popular one. You might also want to follow @yushe on shitposter club he's one of my online friends since long and was the guy who introduced me to the system. Although most of the people on that instance are Spanish it's a pretty popular one for other people too

Why should I register to an instance?
For the reasons listed above, if you support free speech and basically you don't want your data being controlled. Just do it for great justice then if you can't think of a reason lol.

How do I make a GNUsocial instance?
You'll want to have a web server which can take some load, that has a decently sized MySQL database and runs PHP 5.5 or above. There's not much more you need other than that but make sure to use a stable build so that your instance will work. You can customise things later if you like.

Note that this isn't going to work on a free host for several reasons like PHP restriction, server resources and such. If I was able to make a second database sized 2GB (I'm allowed 2 GB database + 3 400MB ones) I would definitely set up an instance on there for my community, but sadly not.
