| Technically, 2010 is the last year of the 00s not the first year of the 10s. The calendar starts at 1 not 0. |

| I think I've only played three Sonic games, so my thoughts here are limited. I will say that I didn't get on at all with the original Sonic the Hedgehog, and I loved Sonic Generations despite the 2D bits annoying me. The best Sonic game I've played is, in all honesty, Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed. |

Actually, it's because I genuinely thought Colours was released in 2008 and did not check my facts. |

| I was trying to save you face, bud! Sonic Games What Luke Has PlayedSonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic Advance I played various of the 2D Sonics on Master System, Sega Genesis, Game Boys and whatnot. I like to take the piss but they're not terrible, really. They're fun when they let you go quick, albeit not particularly interactive, and they're a bit fiddly when they're slow.Sonic and the Secret Rings I actually quite liked this one. Simple but fun, and for my money the best version of Sonic's speed in a 3D game. I even liked the cheesealicious music at the time.Sonic Unleashed I remember liking the Sonic bits and finding the Werehog stuff tedious, just like everyone else on Earth.Sonic Colours People liked to think this was Sonic's Mario Galaxy, but it didn't really live up to that. It was pretty fun, I suppose.Sonic Rush This is the only one I genuinely like. The stunt stuff and the boosts add up to make that standard left-to-right speeding properly enjoyable. I have Sonic Lost World on my Wii U, but I've not played it yet. I was also quite fond of Sonic the Comic and Sonic Underground as a kid. |

| I had a Mega Drive at the time and have never owned a SNES, but I'll admit that nothing on the system matches up to the timelessness of Super Metroid, Super Mario World and A Link to the Past. Is there a Mega Drive RPG as good as Chrono Trigger? |

| You should see the Console Mishaps thread, Cappa - though I suppose survival horror is sort of appropriate in that thread. What's the next game series then, team? |

| Star Fox! It's fondly thought of as one of the very best series in the whole of Nintendo's long and illustrious gaming history...which I've always found a bit queer as a few of them are a bit keech. Starting from worst to best, here's my thoughts on the Star Fox games. Beginning with the worst, I'm straight in there with Star Fox Adventures on the GameCube. I think it’s baws. Hours and hours of corridors, and that’s your whack. It’s like it Harvey Price tried to make Ocarina of Time. Moving on. While I can appreciate how well Star Fox Command runs and looks on it’s very limited native hardware, it’s just a bit of a misstep altogether. There’s the odd moment of excitement right enough, but I didn’t welcome the new direction that it looked like the series was taking. Scouring big, boring maps while taking turns is a far cry from what I considered to make Star Fox a worthwhile Nintendo series. Back in 2003/2004, I was well excited for Star Fox Assault on the GameCube. I got the chance to play a demo of the first level in HMV in Glasgow back when Nintendo UK were doing some mad GameCube tour, and I thought that it was quality. I never got round to buying it until three years ago, and I only played it through for the first time in 2015. You don’t often get to copy and paste an old post here on GNamer, but I can right now with my review of Assault from back in September last year: - Quote :
- I can see why Nintendo didn't resurrect this series until almost a decade later. Namco really dropped the ball with this. They experimented and tried to add depth to the Starwing/Lylat Wars formula, but criminally they made a horse's arse of it. On-foot sections was their big idea, but they're cumbersome, unpolished and very, very plain. It's especially gutting, as they make up seven of the game's ten levels. Basically, seven tenths of the game is mince! The other three levels are old-school Arwing levels like you played on SNES and on N64, but they're not good enough to make up for how lousy the rest of the game is. I'd go as far to say that the worst bits of Lylat Wars' single player are still better than the best things in Assault.
I knew from reviews at the time that this wasn't exactly regarded as vintage Nintendo, but it surprised me; I really didn't enjoy much of this at all. Repetitive, uninspiring and far too expensive - I couldn't recommend it. I hope PlatinumGames and Nintendo don't "reimagine" anything from Starfox Assault It has it’s fans, but I’m not one of them. What’s the most disappointing game of 2016? I’m saying that it’s Star Fox Zero on Wii U. I expected something exceptional, but to me it was all a bit familiar and a wee bit outdated. That’s the fault of the level designers. There’s nothing new here, except the controls, which are infuriating, gimmicky and just different for the sake of being different. They’re gash too. Let’s never see those controls in another Star Fox game again. Starwing on the SNES is still a fun game. I’m not sure if it’s the classic that it’s typically lauded as, but it’s an entertaining and memorable all-rounder. Good beginnings for a franchise that I don't feel has lived up to it's potential in the last twenty years. I don’t think anybody can doubt that Lylat Wars on N64 is a classic though. That’s a belter, whether on N64 or as Star Fox 64 3D on 3DS. Not much else to say other than that this is surely everybody else’s favourite Star Fox game, right?

| Yeah, obviously. Nothing else ever comes close. Apart from the Crumpster, who I'm sure will put up a spirited and entirely incorrect defence of Command.
I've only actually played three - Command, Zero, and SF64. The first two were both hamstrung by poor ideas: the former the dire strategy bits, the latter trying to reinvent the steering wheel.
SF64 is old, and I'm sure my memories of it are rose-tinted. But it's still better than those two. |

| I've only played two Star Fox games myself - Adventures and Lylat Wars.
I played Adventures first and I actually ended up enjoying a fair whack of it outside of having to spend time with Prince (Rock a Rhyme That's Right on Time It's) Tricky. In retrospect, the game is probably shite - I've not played it since so I can't say for sure. It's a safe bet, though.
Lylat Wars is a cracker though - I need to jump on SF64 3D at some point and replay it on 3DS. |
