Yep, Nintendo did it back a little but "edgy" has never been their schtick really. I think they look better for it to be honest, it's all a bit cringe when you look back now.
This is edgy

I wish Daikatana had been good enough to be worthy of that campaign.

I vaguely remember when a company would just use a picture of a woman in her bikini, having nothing to do with the title in question, to advertise a game. This was in CVG when I was too young to recognise what the heck was the point. Then I stopped getting multiformat mags and saw much less of that particular brand of awfulness.

I remember those kinds of adverts being very desirable when I was growing a little older but did not yet have unrestricted access to the internet. Nina Williams, the cast of Dead or Alive, Lara Croft and a full-page of Billie Piper in Doctor Who magazine, I salute you.

As someone who's never been attracted to women, those adverts did not work on me, and if anything made me feel embarrassed to be associated with the demographic those ads were pitched at. But then big companies are hardly known to care for us gays!

I am talking about being 13, mind. Nowadays I think they're at best cringeworthy, at worst pretty harmful to players who don't fit that mold.

Oh sure - I meant the same kind of age, although I considered myself straight at the time (little did I know) - I just found the association with the stereotype uncomfortable, though I couldn't put my finger on why. I remember quite clearly a friend of mine having posters of cars and scantily-clad women (there was definitely a Layer Cake poster in his room) and thinking "god I would never choose to own anything like this". But being into video games, I was pretty exposed to it! Lush polygonal boobs and that.

Whereas I was actually straight (wasn't sure of it at the time mind), but had the looming spectre of CATHOLICISM breathing down my neck every time I saw a space between sock and trouser/skirt.
That said, as an adolescent I was fully into Nintendonly mags and, as mentioned, got a lot less flesh there. The main one I remember getting hot and bothered by when I was an age for heat and botheredness was for Beach Spikers, where half the ad was just a woman's torso. No head, no legs. Just torso. Ick.
(That said, it's more understandable for a beach volleyball game where that sort of thing seems to be a good 79% of the appeal - 79% being what NGC gave it, I think. Why do these things stick in my head when useful things don't? )

Luckily, my Catholic guilt was no match for my natural instinct to rebel against everything and never ever do what I'm told.

I was recently given a treasure trove of old Gamemaster magazines that I bought and kept in my dad's garage for some reason - there is a lot of those sort of ads you're describing there!

I wonder what reason that could be.

An all-timer. I made Matt watch that one time.
I don't remember many Xbox ads, but there were some stunning Halo ads back in the day.

I remember that one, Nintendo really went a bit bonkers around the Cube era didn't they? Also look at that price! We were really spoilt by the GameCube.

If I saw a gamecube, Donkey Konga and Bongos bundle for £90 TODAY I would snap it up. Blimey!

So, with Monster Hunter returning to a Nintendo console in a few days let's have a look at those MH tri wii adverts again.
