 | Subject: One Year of the Switch Voting Thread (Sixth-Year Games Lists on Page 11) Sun 18 Feb 2018 - 11:40 | |
| The Switch has had a bloody fantastic first year. It's a year worth celebrating. Let's do that, and decide upon the best games on Switch thus far along the way. Big Top Ten Vote:Tenth Place Ninth Place Eighth Place Seventh Place Sixth Place Fifth Place Fourth Place Third Place Second Place First Place Other Votes and Stuff:Best Multiplayer Game Vote Best Downloadable-Only Game Vote Honourable and Dishonourable Mentions Other Games, Awards Awards, and Final Thoughts - Pre-Awards OP:
'Oh God, not another voting thread! Zero's 2017 Summary only finished this week.’ Yes, sorry about that. I wasn't aware that the Forum Awards would finish in mid-February - and neither, perhaps, was Zero. But if his thread was a scrumptious banquet from which you're still stuffed, mine is but a waffer-thin mint you can still, I'm sure, squeeze in. - TOP TEN SWITCH GAMES
- TOP FIVE DIGITAL-ONLY SWITCH GAMES
- TOP FIVE MULTIPLAYER GAMES ON SWITCH
- HONOURABLES AND DISHONOURABLES
- RESULTS PUBLISHED OVER ONE WEEK ONLY
- EVERY COMMENT PUBLISHED
- NO EXTRA CATEGORIES
- ALL QUESTIONS PRE-ANSWERED
That's right. No 'best game played in tabletop mode'. No 'best question in Jackbox 3'. I love those: this isn’t the place for them. Just four simple categories. Also, I've compiled every question you could possibly want to ask below. I’m good like that. Deadline is 2359 on Sunday 4th March. That's in two weeks' time. Two weeks and not a lot to vote on, to land the awards just after the Switch's first anniversary. Please don't make me put in an extension. We're missing at least two fine forumites from this vote (Athrun and GJones, possibly Jas). Every voter counts. Let's get a good thing going. - Voting Basics:
I maintain my wavering hope that we might get some new forumites, some time. Sob. These answers are still phrased for old hands.
How do I vote? You PM me a list of your top ten games released on Switch between 3rd March 2017 and 2nd March 2018 inclusive; your top five games released on Switch between those dates in digital-only form; your top five games that you've enjoyed in multiplayer, released on Switch between those dates; and any other things about the Switch you'd like to mention, honourable or dishonourable.
Preferably put every game/mention on a separate line, along with comments about why you're voting for/mentioning this; and bold the thing you're voting for/mentioning. Please? It helps me put things together. There's a template for this in the third spoiler below.
And (it's happened before) ideally don't post your votes in the thread until the end - it helps keep the mystique. That said, if that's the condition on which you vote, then post away.
Do I have to contribute to everything? Nope. All categories optional, filling out each list with max. games also optional. Take part as much as pleases you.
What about comments? Do I have to put those? Votes no (although the comments are arguably the best part), mentions yes. A list of game names in the mentions, on its own, is no fun for anyone.
What if I don't lay things out like you ask? Then I'll be very sad, but I'll sort them out. The exception is for the mentions categories: if you group them up in a single unbroken paragraph, I'll post them, but separately under everyone else's. That'll learn ya.
What will you do with the votes? Tally 'em up, and bung the winners your way over the course of a week. Any comments for games that don't make the forum top ten/five will go up afterwards.
What will you do with the mentions? Post them all.
I've only played six Switch games, but I don't think the sixth one is worthy of five points. If you number it ten, I'll give it the points a tenth game would get. You can have a tenth place but not a ninth if you'd like. Or if you really dislike it, don't vote for it at all, put it in the dishonourables, and pour scorn on it. Same goes for the other two votes.
Will there be celebrity guests? If you mean, 'Will you ask Scully and Castle and WOverton for some thoughts?' then no. If you mean, 'Will you do your usual voting thread nonsense and feature Phoenix Wright, Frodo Baggins, and/or the Man from Del Monte?' then I recommend making like SETI and watching this space.
What's the point of this thread? We already know what 1 and 2 are going to be. That leaves eight slots undecided in the main category alone. Don't be silly.
Can we change the timing? We've just had Zero's thread... No, sorry. C'mon mate, I can't change when the Switch was released. Work with me on this one.
- Voting Specifics:
For those games whose voteworthiness might perhaps be unclear. Can I vote for a game that’s only been released on import? If you've played it, why not? We live in a region-free world, my friend. Can I vote for a port of a game not originally on Switch?Yes. Can I vote for a port of a game not originally on Switch, if I've played the game... but not on Switch?Yes! But you don't have to if you don't consider it a 'Switch game'. Maybe consider the extra impact it being portable might have? I'm easy either way. Same goes for dual releases, e.g. BotW, Fire Emblem Warriors. Does this mean I can vote if I’ve never played a Switch? Please do not do that. Please do, however, get involved in the discussion as the results come out! Can I vote for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, if I've only played Mario Kart 8?I mean... if you want? I'm not going to fact-check with you. Depends if you think portability, decent Battle Mode, and the availability of King Boo will change your opinion drastically. Can I vote for a Virtual Console game?Trick question! The Switch has no VC at this time ( ). If it's a port of a retro game, see four questions up. How do I define if a game's digital-only or not? This old chestnut. Use some common sense, is the short answer. - If there's no physical edition of the game on Switch (physical versions with massive sod-off patches you have to download are still physical versions), it's digital-only.
- If a game's physical edition was only available to Kickstarter backers, or came out months after the game's digital release, it can be considered digital-only for these votes.
- If the game had a limited physical run at release, things start to get trickier. How easy was it for people in general to get hold of those physical copies?
I’d say Rocket League counts as digital-only, for example, despite its January physical release. Ultimately, though, it's up to you. Worst case scenario, you vote for a physical game, nobody else does, and you look a bit silly. Only it's all anonymous, so perhaps not even that. Can I vote for digital-only games in the big ten-point vote as well?Definitely. This is encouraged. The ten-pointer should be for the best of both digital and retail Switch games. The multiplayer games vote, then. Can I vote for a multiplayer-focussed game if I've only played and enjoyed the single-player mode?...I suppose? But that isn't really the point of this particular vote. Although, again, I won't fact-check. Okay, keep your hair on. What if I've only played online multiplayer? That counts! Online and local multiplayer experiences are equally valid. What if it's takey-turny?That is also valid! What if I've played, say, Breath of the Wild by taking turns with a mate...?Really? Well, if you insist. The only condition is that you've enjoyed your experiences of the game with multiple players. Note: multiple players. Both/all of you must have picked up a controller. If you've just been telling your mate what to do in BotW, that doesn't count. Or shouldn't: stop me if you've heard this before, but, I won't be fact-checking. What should I give honourable mentions to?Anything Switch-related that you didn't vote for, frankly. Can be a level, a character, a power-up, a real-life person, a peripheral, the concept of HD Rumble... Perhaps not games that simply didn't make it into the lists, you can mention them in the thread when they come up/at the end. If you want to mention game number 11 here, though, I won't stop you. And dishonourable mentions?Like the above, only this time I'd actively encourage you to tear into games you didn't like! As well as anything else-Switch related that rubbed you up the wrong way. If they really disappointed you, that's also fine. Anything that elicited negative emotions strong enough to talk about. How many things can I mention? No formal limit, but if you're giving me twenty of each I'll look at you funny. You won't be able to see me... but you'll know. I read all of this balderdash and I didn’t even need an answer to a question. Can I have a cookie? No. They were eaten while you were reading all of this balderdash.

| RIGHT.
I like a good vote thread, but I'm not super into them like the Balls Man. I'm also not entirely sure the Switch needs a best game vote this early into it's life, especially with a Switch-heavy GotY podcast and Zero's vote both being so recent.
All of that said, I do agree that the Switch's year is worth celebrating and I can see that this means a lot to Balla so I for one have started on a big old submission for this bad boy. I hope everyone else does the same!
(I might not actually be sending said votes through until closer to the time, as I still have a few games I've not played, or don't feel I've played enough). |

| Historically we have done the first year for a system then a 3rd year and 5th or all over final vote in the case of the Wii U but as we've got a Switch vote sort of means no 7th year 3DS vote but reckon that could be very much mean could get an 8th / all over final vote in 2019.
Edit I've played something like 50+ games on Switch from looking with most coming from NSG and are things from 10tons, I have narrowed down to a Top 10, Top 5 downloads and Top 5 Multiplayer (well only 4 as I haven't done much multiplayer on Switch).
I'm just undecided on the order of the Top 10 and I feel I need do play Night in the Woods as that's a game I own that could easily make either or both Top 10 or Top 5 downloads.
Everything else looks like just good games that I've not played, maybe not Xenoblade 2 but I'm not going to have time even with 2 weeks to give its due to be voted for and sure I will miss some things like Celeste and Owlboy that maybe I should play but not paying £19 also something might come out like Old Man's Journey worth a vote. |

| Good going Mas, I don't even have my voting slates together yet! Drunka, I did have your concerns about Zero's thread and Jay's podcast. Ultimately, I feel that there was enough Nontendo/3DS in the latter, and no sufficiently clean-cut third place in the former, to make this still worth doing. I hope y'all agree. - Drunkalilly wrote:

More than it's cool to admit. I appreciate your efforts sir. |

| I've just jotted a rough top ten on the back of an envelope - literally - and I'm happy with it. However, I'm going to hang fire a little in case something I'm sitting on at the moment jumps into contention ( *cough*DragonQuestBuilders(itisunlikelythough-seemsabitdull) *cough*). Then it's just down to the praisey, praisey comments. Unless I'm hating on something. A few Switch games I've played do have it coming. |

No worries sir. If nothing else, it allowed me to test that I really had EVERY QUESTION ANSWERED! And you might well be right about NitW, it's a real shame I won't get to play much more of it before the deadline. - ZeroJones wrote:

Woo! Doesn't sound like DQB will be it though. I'm not sure many Switch games I've played have had it coming, mind... with one exception. |

| I appreciate the simplicity of the categories! I'll have to jog the ol' noggin (read: check my Switch library) and draft up a list for your good self, Balla.
Expect some votes... SOON.tm
And by soon... I mean Thursday, in all likelihood! |

| Yeah, I'll try to get some votes over to you for this (no promises though) but like others have already mentioned I have a few games I bought a while ago that I haven't played yet & I'd like to give them a decent go so I could at least consider them.

| Given your views on voting threads, Jas, anything you can provide will be welcome. Jay too, natch. And I completely get the thing about wanting to cram in some games before the deadline: I'm doing that myself. That said, if y'all submit votes on Sunday 4th I reserve the right to a one-day delay. |

| ONE WEEK and a bit WARNINGNormally I'd be worried about only having two votes at this point in time; however, I know that people are polishing off games to shove on lists, as well as those who've mentioned their progress above. I'm more worried about the people who haven't posted here at all (and haven't voted). I could and will happily run a voting thread with only the thread's current posters and voters, but it'd be good to know if anyone else will fire anything my way! Oh, and if you want a week's extension, it starts now. |

I agree with Jim it was hard work and you'll all disagree with me but I could think of one clear number 1 but everything else was sort on par with no other real standout, just some good solid games. |
