Death's Door (CORVID-19) ?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftse1.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOIP

Quote :
Reaping souls of the dead and punching a clock might get monotonous but it's honest work for a Crow. The job gets lively when your assigned soul is stolen and you must track down a desperate thief to a realm untouched by death - where creatures grow far past their expiry.

Talon Sharp Combat: Utilise melee weapons, arrows and magic to overcome a fantastic array of beasts and demigods. Mistakes are punished and victory is rewarded. Gain an edge by customising your character stats and mastering the abilities and upgrades you obtain.

A Beautifully Bleak World: Venture beyond the Doors and explore a land full of twisted inhabitants and countless secrets, bringing hope to the weird and wonderful characters you’ll meet along the way.

A Dark Mystery to Unravel: Track down and defeat colossal tyrants with stories and motivations of their own. Experience a sombre yet darkly comedic tale, uncovering the truths behind the flow of souls, the role of the Crows and the origin of the Doors.

So it's 2D Zelda with a grim tone and high difficulty. Enough of us seem to have it or be interested in it to warrant a thread, and it's been warmly received by the wider gaming press too. It might just be too hard for me, but we'll see. Anybody have any thoughts?

Love a good (or even middling) 2D Zelda-like but I haven't got this yet.

This got big chat on TCGS earlier in the year, so I've got it downloaded and I'm keen for a bit.

PostSubject: Re: Death's Door (CORVID-19)   Death's Door (CORVID-19) EmptyFri 3 Dec 2021 - 19:25

My very brief opening thoughts then, and I'll probably get into the game a bit more now: this is a nice little Zelda-like, only I haven't got any items yet and the movement is crushingly slow. This isn't helped by some of the more, ahem, inventive checkpointing: there's a boss in the Urn Witch's gardens that killed me time and again, and between the crow's movement pace and the location of the boss I wasted far too much time getting back there. I don't think I'll be able to get over the crow, a flying bird, not being able to jump either.

Otherwise, well it's a bit grim isn't it. The Urn Mansion NPC had big Solaire energy (says he who knows nothing about Solaire), and combined with the high difficulty and general grimness of ambience I ended up making the mental comparison I hate.

I think it will be one of those games that becomes better as my crow gets more abilities, but I can't see how it gets from these beginnings to a 'wonderful game' at this point.

Just keep rolling mate, you fly around.

I would say I thought it was a wonderful game from the off, I felt the difficulty was at a level that always felt achievable and the checkpointing never made me feel like I had a slog to get back to where I was. If anything the stretches with normal enemies have proven more challenging, especially on my umbrella run.

So maybe be a bit more cautious with the idea that it might suddenly click...

I think I'm with you Balla having played it for a little while, it's disappointingly more Souls-like than Zelda-like.

I think in feeling like the overworld side is missing, I now understand emotionally what it's like to dislike Skyward Sword. Not that I ever can, of course! Razz

Also, while this is 2D, I'd say it feels very similar to me to Blue Fire. Not sure if anyone else bought that in the end, but I suspect Balla you wouldn't like it!

Aw no, Blue Fire's on my wishlist! Is it not completely the opposite though, really fast-paced?

I don't know, there was a moment between finding myself back in the Hall of Doors after the manor and following the meeting with the NPC that follows the Urn Witch that I felt it did. I found the chest amusing and the challenge within well-pitched, I really liked the next area (having the mechanisms work to the music was a real grinworthy moment), liked the boss, liked the meeting you have after the boss, thought the way you get to the overgrown area was cute and funny... and then found myself back in an unimaginative flat bit of 'overworld' with slightly tedious design, blowing up rocks with sunflowers and slashing through mobs. So it kind of... unclicked again.

Blue Fire also has the Zelda x Dark Souls feel but more on the Dark Souls end of the spectrum than I'd prefer. Basically a little too much bleak dungeoneering without enough character led side quests and exploration to balance things out, and combat I don't particularly enjoy. It is much quicker though, and it has the whole 3D platforming element to set it apart, but I'd also say it's notably less polished than Death's Door. That said it has had a lot of post-release support that may have changed the experience significantly since I tried it.

As for Death's Door, I've beaten the second big boss now and I enjoyed the second region more, but still have my complaints about the pacing and the combat.

I wonder if like me you liked the mechanics but just thought they started to drag a little? The design in this is unarguably competent as its always mixing things up, but I feel like it keeps overstaying the welcome by iterating through every variation before moving on. Like with those bomb flowers, they are a fun mechanic and had some good to execute puzzles, but I could have done with that outside area being half the length it was - once I've got the flower to blow up some rocks and/or enemies in a few different variations, I don't need to iterate through the rest, I'm ready for something else. It's not as bad as the game repeating the same challenge over and over, it doesn't do that, but it still starts to be a slog for me.

Yep okay that's probably scratched it from my list.

As for the dragging thing... pfffft, I don't know. I think it's because the area felt a bit... forced in its design. Wending its way back and forth in a manner transparently designed to minimise journey from the one checkpoint back to where you got. With the garden it was understandable, with the manor it was natural, with what's meant to be a natural area it all feels a bit Super Mario 3D World and its blocky locales. That, combined with probably the least interesting aesthetic so far in the game.

But then I got into some combat and enjoyed myself. I like the combat, garden boss aside. It's the bits in between the combat that I don't think are all that.

I finished it earlier in the week and I'm much closer to Andy's thoughts, I do think it clicked with me right away though and despite the odd frustrating battle I never really fell off it. I'd summarise it as really polished with some great music and atmosphere, I'd put it closer to an almost pleasant melancholy (if that even makes sense) than grim.

PostSubject: Re: Death's Door (CORVID-19)   Death's Door (CORVID-19) EmptyFri 10 Dec 2021 - 19:27

I'm up to the AVARICE in the third land and, like OR but not to OR's extent, I've grown more positive as I've played. Part of that could just be the fact that the crow's faster: I had the speed at level 4 before anything else reached level 3. Part of it could be that I'm learning his rhythms in combat more. Part of that is definitely a couple more characters: can we all agree that Jefferson is one of the best NPCs in gaming? And part of that's because I'm enjoying the snowy castle more than I did the flat planty bits. The second items are a really useful addition to the crow's moveset as well.

However, as I've started to go back to find things I've missed (thank you Jefferson), one of the stupidest aspects of the game is really making itself felt. Why is there no map? At all? Ever after you've been through rooms? Markable maps are one of the best innovations in gaming in the last decade, and here we don't have anything. That's lunacy.

I am humming the music more and more though, so you're probably right there.

Jefferson is brilliant, agreed there in spades, that does remind me of my main gripe, I'd like to have seen more dialogue and exchanges from NPCs as what's there is very well written.

I get the map thing to some extent as I never realised I could go through the tunnel areas till after I finished the game at which point I couldn't remember where I'd seen the panels for me to backtrack but that's on me a little bit and the only time I'd ever felt it was an issue. I stand by my earlier assessment of its not game of the year material but it's easily in my top 10.

Same here... but I've only played ten games I enjoyed from this year. Laughing So far, with potentially three to go.

The map thing though is a reason why I'm not tempted by the (very good according to OR) postgame.  It's not the only reason, but it is a reason.

Understandable, I did use a guide myself to find a few things in the post game but again that could have been down to the aforementioned cock up I made, some parts of it were really good, although the actual pay off wasn't all that in my opinion.

This game is belting! I loved it from the first moment and just got more and more into it up until the title card

Jim Sterling's GotY as well, albeit in a pretty unsatisfactory Y for them. I definitely feel like you get a lot more out of this if you're into Souls etc.

I am waiting for Heavy Zeltal to be off in the distance so I can lay down a bunch of tracks from this though.

It's very atmospheric, though I can't say it's had a real earworm for me yet.

Like most Nintendo fans Razz

I do still follow and the industry stuff is always interesting and their views on games, as they'll bring up something a bit more out there & less mainstream such as Road 96 (Which I still need to play).
