So I just watched someone complete Ocarina of time in 22:38 which, all things considered is a very fast time for any game. But what do you guys think of speed running? Particularly the enthusiasts like the ones in the video who spent 13 years trawling the game for glitches. And have you ever tried a speed run? If so, on which game and how fast did you go? With the rise of E-sports could this be the next 100m dash?

Saw this on CVG, and this isn't a speed run. It doesn't show off the fastest and cleverest ways to play the game, just how to abuse the cartridge mechanics. For something that's genuinely impressive (still quite a few glitches), have a look at this...
Speedrunning isn't for me, but if it's what other people want to do with their free time, then let them.

It technically is a speed-run - he's triggered the credits through means available in the game. I do understand what you mean though, he isn't beating the majority of the content of the game, that's why it's labelled as an "any-%" run - there's 100% speedruns of OoT out there.
I'm dead into watching speedruns - decent to have on if I've work to do and just have it running in the background. This is my favourite speedrun. It's the same guy from the video in the OP, and he talks you through all the exploits he uses. He gets from Outset Island to the first Triangle Island at 1:35:20 in about 10 seconds with one of the exploits he uses, it's mad.

Speed runs intrigue me but I won't actively seek them out. When presented with a good one I'll probably watch it. My favourite one was a Super Mario Bros. 3 run, which I now cannot find. It was tool-assisted and showed the game being beaten with 99 lives. It was amazing.

I know it's technically a speed run: I just don't feel it tests some of the more interesting aspects that the genre should illustrate.

I do like watching them but never attempted one before I also prefer ones that don't use glitches, oh & speed run races are even better & my favourite has to be LTTP by NintendoCapriSun w/ 3 other folk I can't seem to remember.

Me and my mate, have done speed-runs. But were not very quick lol, he pretty much 100% OoT and took him 8hrs i think if i remember correctly. We also did resident evil 2 and did that in about 2hrs and mario bros 3 which takes about 3mins lol.
I find speed runs a lot less impressive when they exploit glitches, it's not technically completing the game is it?
See, I don't agree with this mentality. The sheer effort it takes to discover, initiate and then integrate these glitches into a speedrun is damn impressive. I've majorly got into watching speedruns recently and there's something addictive about seeing these guys fly from the beginning to the end of a game, shaving off seconds each time they do so. It boggles my mind that there exists within many games ways to bypass a lot of the game due to oversights by the developers, or in the case of Metroid games implemented features by the developers.

To each their own, I suppose. I find both full playthroughs and any% runs equally impressive - I think it's a discredit to the hard work the any% speedrunners put in to discount their speedruns.

I like the idea of speedruns, but I can't bear the thought of trying to beat e.g. a JRPG speedrun of 5 hours. Really? That's a lot of time spent doing that.

I've only attempted one proper speed-run, one I revisit from time-to-time, and I do start becoming a little more efficient upon repeated attempts. I can do Super Mario Land in about seventeen minutes. I don't care that it's not the world's fastest time, it's just something I do for fun.

Bloody Hell, that's impressive.
Since your bumped the topic, I'll weigh in. I used to be able to do super Mario Bros in about 5 mins, but I've left it too long and lost my touch. I'm trying to get my groove back, then I had the idea to master it blindfolded as a party trick.
