Puzzle Dragons Empty
PostSubject: Puzzle Dragons   Puzzle Dragons EmptyThu 16 Apr 2015 - 23:41

So I played through the demo of the Mario-themed Puzzle Dragons tonight and I can't really work out how much I like it! It's essentially a match-3 game but it plays slightly differently - you can slide one tile around to match 3, but the other tiles slide out of the way when you move it, and a timer starts as soon as you pick a tile up. You also have your "team" because it's set up kind of like an RPG. It's fun! But I can't really work out the intricacies of my team members and their moves that I activate, and I'm struggling to predict how the tiles will move around as soon as I start sliding the tile I choose.

That paragraph probably didn't make the slightest bit of sense if you haven't had a go, so... have you?

I hadn't realised the demo was out. Thanks for the heads up! TO my surprise I actually enjoyed this! The pieces sliding away from each other made all the difference from the pokemon style of just move it wherever you want, plus the battles work much better. Might need to part with some cash for this...

It made me laugh to learn that this is a retail release when the original is free on iPhone. I wasn't massively taken with the iOS game, but I might give this a go for shits and giggles. Or mainly to see how much they've Mario-ised it.

I played this on the loo this evening *coughs* and I quite enjoyed this too.

The tactile feel of sliding the pieces around is pretty transformative, in my eyes, and while long-form combos are going to be as random as in Pokémon Shuffle, you can at least set up and play more strategically while making that one move. It didn't feel awfully balanced, though, I had no indication as to how well I should be doing, or what determined damage -- too many little elements in play methinks.

I'm looking forward to hearing what Stu makes of this, too, since he's played the original game. One of Nintendo's aims for NX is to offer "premium" game experiences, so I wonder if that means we'll see more F2P games refitted to a premium pay-once-then-DLC model? I wouldn't mind having the choice between the two, in all honesty.

I have downloaded this, but I've been distracted by StreetPass today. Will share my thoughts over the weekend.

I've no idea why this can't be Free to Start. The pay elements in the iPhone outing weren't too intrusive in the limited time I made into it.

Fronky, playing games on the loo?! That's not like you at all! Winky Face

The second bit that's survived my edit of your quote hits the nail on the head for me (though I am basing all of this on the iOS version that I've played). The mechanics weren't explained terribly well, either. I'll try to download the demo in a bit and, like Stu, give of more impression later. Thumbs Up!

Anybody else taken/taking the plunge? Really enjoying this so far, despite the Mario edition seeming to be the big emphasis I think Z is a much better starting point. Can't wait to play more!

shanks has it for me - the demo didn't help me get over the misgivings I had about the iOS game, so I'm not going to bother. Hope you keep enjoying it, Mr. man949!
