It has aged badly, I think the controls could be called pants, but the world design, quest design, and pacing are excellent.

That sounds like a score... no. The score. Yeah, that is literally The Score.

I'm checking Metacritic and that's not the score? Fuck Metacritic.

Looking back through old threads, I found this. I feel like Star Fox Zero needs to go on my list. Obviously YMMW, and Jas will boak to see it here, and part of it might be me being disappointed with myself: I couldn't master the controls, to get the most out of what looked like it was probably a good game regardless. But I must say that I was crushed when I found it as unwieldy as it was. The triumphant return of one of the great old Nintendo franchises, clamoured for by fans, returning to the Lylat Wars-esque structure that is Star Fox Done Right... and they/I bottled it. Aww!

Also Colour Splash for not being a proper RPG. DAMN YOU!

Epic Mickey, with its massively overhyped 'choice' mechanic that did next to nothing, its N64-era camera and periods of wretchedly dull gameplay, you mean?

And taking possibly the world's most famous fictional character, and making him jump far too high for the speed he's running at, thus giving the game a Steam Greenlight feel? With the afore-mentioned-by-ZeroJones camera too close, so it sort of flips up and down as you perform said jump?
Yeah, I agree Cappa/Zero; it was indicated that Epic Mickey was a wonderful platformer with a lovely history lesson thrown it. The former didn't happen and therefore eradicated the latter.

Time to call it: Mario Sports Superstars. I wasn't expecting the Earth - just that maybe two or three of the games would be fun. The football is naff, the golf slight, the tennis limp, the baseball pants and the horse racing dull. It's a fun vacuum, and the first game I've considered trading in without beating it in a very long time. Simply no.

That is unfortunate. Have you had much opportunity to play it in multiplayer at all? Do you think that would be enough to make a difference?

If there's download play (and if you still have it by then...) we could try and squeeze some more value for money out of it at the meet-up, I suppose.

Sadly not - I'll see if I can keep it until the next StreetPass Manchester meet I can get to and report right back. Thumbs Up!

Download Play is not supported, I'm afraid. We'd all need copies of the game each, and seeing as my astral form would visit any of you who tried to buy it and wail "NOOO!" in your ear, it'll never happen.

I feel the same way about Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash on the Wii U as you do about Mario Sports Superstars. It's a miserable effort.

And Tennis Open before that, and I wasn't tremendously enamoured with the Mario Golf on the 3DS either... Time to put Camelot in the same category as Arzest?

I liked Open and World Tour well enough to cut them some slack. They clearly had their development time for Ultra Smash cut drastically - if they get long enough to work on them, I'm sure Camelot will produce excellent Switch Mario Tennis and Mario Golf games. Thumbs Up! Slapping them down to Arzest level seems a bit harsh.

Camelot are clearly talented guys who haven't been playing to their strengths. Fingers crossed we have another proper Sports game with RPG elements from them on Switch.

Crushing Disappointment - Page 2 51P7GNWW3GL

This'll mean nowt to most of youse, but WWE Wrestlemania X8 on the GameCube was well disappointing when it came out in 2002. You've got to remember, this was coming out close to the time of WWE SmackDown: Shut Your Mouth on PS2, and on Nintendo it was releasing straight after the likes of WCW/NWO Revenge and WWF No Mercy, which are classics in the genre. Expectations were high, and not unreasonably so. I think NGC even stuck it on the cover one time, it was that colossal and earth-shattering of a game.

It was like an unhappy mixture of the first PSone SmackDown game and the first AKI wrestling game on the N64, only with fewer wrestlers, fewer match types and a worse create-a-wrestler. It really lacked any sort of originality or individuality as well - all the modes pretty much played the same way, and it didn't matter who you picked to play as in the first place as every character had so few moves. None of the moves felt meaty anyway, but fighting your matches with this sort of soundtrack just knackered the whole thing:

It was a step backwards for WWE games. The follow-up was only a little bit better (as in, if X8 was a 40% game, then X9 would have been a 41% game), but the Day of Reckoning games were quality. To it's credit though, X8 had one really smart idea: the Battle for the Belts mode, which had you fighting for loads of different semi-real belts from across the world, and defend them against your mates over memory cards. I remember beating my pal for about twenty of his belts, and he was just about in tears. What a cunt!

The best WWE wrestling games of that era were all on PS2 - Shut Your Mouth and Here Comes The Pain being the standouts of the bunch.

On a side note... why the hell is RVD on the cover next to The Rock and Hogan? Was he honestly that popular back in '02? Laughing

He won the IC title for the first time at Wrestlemania X8 so it's probably down to that.

It must have sold a fair few copies as it's the quintessential £1 Gamecube game you find in every shop. A real F1 World Grand Prix of a game.

Never played it myself or any of the Gamecube wrasslers. My only exposure to Day of Reckoning was the NoDQ CAW videos on Youtube where wrestling fanatics ran an e-federation with guys like Spiderman and Super Mario wrestling for titles with scripted backstories. Quite sad, but also quite intriguing.

The recent draft in WWE has made me crave some Shut Your Mouth, used to love doing the draft when in 2002, you had guys like Shawn Michaels, Booker T, a young John Cena, Brock Lesnar and still had the NWO, Rock, Stone Cold etc.
