Marop is the absolute BOI

So I watched The Circle the other night on netflix (it was shit) & during the interview scene Emma Watson is asked "Mario or Sonic?" and she replies with "early Sonic late Mario" and I couldn't help think how stupid that statement was for me. While early Sonic is much better than later entries of that series Mario just hasn't had a single bad platforming game in my opinion.

Mario is indeed the absolute boi.

I've seen other examples like Matthew Castle say people only like Crash because they had a PS1 not a N64 and think it's a good platformer. It's one of those things like listening to the Versus Podcast Jay has done, history could be different like I could be a die hard Nintendo fan if I started with a SNES and Balla could be playing Xbox One right now if he starred out with a Mega Drive.

Your theory falls flat though when I point out that I was a SEGA kid! I grew up in a household with a Master System then a Mega Drive. After that, I had a Game Boy primarily for Pokemon. I played Super Mario Land, but didn't understand at the time. We had a PS1, not an N64, and I played the fuck out of Crash.

It wasn't until I got my Gamecube for my 13th birthday and started reading Nintendo mags that I became ａ full Nintendo guy. It was after that I went back and replayed non-Pokemon Ninty games properly, and it was their quality that made me realise how dope mario is, and how nope sonic and crash are.

I'm exactly the same as you know from Versus that I bought a Cube at launch loved it then when back & bought a N64, SNES, NES and Virtual Boy and the quality is there and why I play Nintendo stuff now.

But personally given the choice between Sonic 2 or Super Mario World it's Sonic 2 all day.

Just seems people not me have the view only like X because that's all was available.

That Castle statement is a fact though. At the time, you either had a PS1 or an N64 (unless you was rich, or an adult). It's why people have a fondness for Spyro and Croc, two forgettable platformers that aren't fit to lace Banjo's boots, let alone Mario's. Kids play what they have. Similarly, I had a Mega Drive instead of a SNES so I enjoyed Sonic and missed out on Super Mario World 1 & 2. However, I did own Donkey Kong 94, which is an incredible Mario game itself.

It's still subjective but yeah people play what they have and get a fondness of them, that was my point and for me it's Sonic someone else Crash someone else Blinx

Of course it is subjective, you know how I feel about calling anything like this objective

Personally, I think it's wild to prefer Sonic games as I just don't enjoy the gameplay for the most part, but if you want to, knock yourself out. I don't even want to use the argument that Mario is more popular to come back, because the general public vote like arseholes.


I will say, though, Luigi is definitely the more interesting brother. Naturally, right? The underdog is always more interesting.

Could've said something a bit more about Mario loving being in your game while Sonic felt like he was too cool for you, the player, I suppose?

Spyro is a great trilogy of platformers so that's nonsense above!

Makes me wonder if they'll go Martinet for this upcoming Illumination movie or if they'll tone it down to the ol' Brooklyn accent from the cartoons and the movie. I don't feel like you can change Mario's voice at this point, but maybe I'm too close to the issue.

I might have asked this before, but: what do Italians think of the Mario voice? Is it offensive? I know Uncle Charles is a "Nice Italian Boy", but does that matter? I'm just wondering what happens when there's 90 minutes of the mama-mias.

I can't find a comprehensive study or anything, but all the Quoras and message boards and stuff I found after a cursory google saw Italian folks saying it doesn't bother them, they like Mazza. It's not like Mario is making fun of a specific stereotype or something, its just a fun voice.
