| I think/hope it's getting to the point where What The Golf? deserves its own thread. I think at least three of us have it on Switch, Andy's played it on Apple Arcade, and by most accounts it's a lot of fun! Dubbed 'golf for people who don't like golf', it stays traditional golf for maybe one, two holes before going... strange. If you haven't played it, it's discounted on the eShop store right now (from a pretty cheap price anyway) and I'd heavily recommend it to most people. It's definitely got a decent few laughs out of me, and not just because of the puns. However, one of the main benefits of the game is its sense of surprise, so don't go rooting through spoiler tags in here. If you have got it, any favourite bits? Any bits that made you rage? That's mostly why I made this thread to be honest, to rage... - Lab 6:
The Superhot parody just made me absolutely blow a gasket. Whether it was the par challenges or just avoiding bullets in real-time (strewth!), there's a reason I don't play shooters and this sums it all up! I had to finish it one go, else I worried I might never come back! The Portal bit across the way was great, mind... Oh, and also: the level where there's all the cars and the barrels falling down the hill and you have to navigate a barrel slowly through that mess.

| Ah, I love the sound of WtG from your little write-up there Balla! ...trying it through a month's free trial of Apple Arcade won't break my self-imposed "let's not buy any new games for the rest of 2020" rule, right? |

| Surely not! Also I think you playing anything that's not FFXIV, new or not, has to count as a good thing. |

| I think this loophole has convinced me. I'll take up a month's trial of Apple Arcade and give this a bash once I'm done with Evoland 2 (I let Backloggery decide my fate through its random game option as I was met with choice paralysis looking at my options!) |

| I've been enjoying the game, though broadly speaking the 'par' challenges are my least favourite part - but their presence is par for the course (ahahahahaha) for any kind of golf game. It shines when it does something unexpected - which, granted, is a lot of the time. And I've been enjoying it enough to try and complete all three challenges in all the levels (except I have stalled at a bouncy 'par 2' level - no idea how to achieve that). - Lab 6:
I also didn't especially love the Superhot parodies. That's not fair; I liked them, but not as much as the other challenges up until that point. The bits I found particularly annoying were the 'real time' challenges, particularly the one where you get shot and fail if you don't move IMMEDIATELY once the level starts.

| Yes, would absolutely agree with that. The 'par' challenges fall a bit too far towards puzzle-solving rather than anarchic fun, which is where I think the game excels. There are a couple of brutal ones when you're 'putting' a car...
Also, regarding Rum's spoiler: I didn't mind that level so much as the one with the chair... |

| I played through and 100% completed the first couple of "worlds" in this and left off entering Lab 7. This is good fun! The game really shines when it doesn't try to overcomplicate things and instead revels in being goofy good fun. I quite agree that the par challenges are easily the weakest point and I found myself getting frustrated trying to complete some of them, but it won't be long before the game surprises you with another change of pace or homage and that frustration is quickly forgotten about. |

| Couple of pointers.
First: this game has some (free) Christmas DLC. It's cute, albeit short and easy. I liked it well enough.
Secondly, though: that's actually one of three DLC campaigns currently available, with one more potentially unlocking in the future. Even if you didn't get this for its ridiculous recent sale price, it's definitely exceeding its regular price in value terms.
If you haven't, get it played. |
