My biggest gaming derp would probably be not realising how to get to the Space Zone from the Hippo Zone in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. I got all the other coins and because we didn't have t'Internet back in those days, I had to wait for my cousin to come and visit us from Glasgow for lunch, so I could quiz him on it.

As an eleven-year-old who'd never played an RPG before, I didn't understand the concept of grinding. I was progressing in Final Fantasy VII at great speed, until I hit a boss battle set between two elevators. Obviously I wasn't strong enough to beat it, so I had umpteen separate attempts before eventually giving in. I never beat the game.

A couple of years later, I played a second RPG (Pokémon Blue) and here I finally grasped the concept of grinding.

This morning I realised that Callie-Marie is a squid-based pun. Splatoon has been out for, like, months.

In a nice twist to the usual cement shoes method they went for the cement everything-but-the-shoes approach.

Mario and Luigi don't look so good in that picture. Maybe they think cement is a cure for the plague or something...

That has to be Mario and Luigi's awkward teen phase judging by their horrible acne.

Not to mention Luigi's lack of moustache. He probably had a few downy tufts of fur there at the time.
