Persona 5 and P5: Royal Edition Empty
PostSubject: Persona 5 and P5: Royal Edition   Persona 5 and P5: Royal Edition EmptyMon 1 Sep 2014 - 10:12

Teaser trailer

So Persona 5 has its first teaser trailer (not counting the announcement trailer). Some big points coming from this trailer are that it's coming to PS4 in addition to PS3 and that it's set in Shibuya.

The latter point has me really excited - it gave me instant The World Ends With You vibes.

Thoughts? What do you think of the new lead protagonist? Excited about it coming to PS4 too? The PS4's definitely looking more and more like a viable option now.

I'm interested though I'm really not sure what the PS4 is going to add to a game like Persona. The games aren't graphical powerhouses so I don't see that extra layer of sheen doing much.

Naturally I'd prefer it to be on a handheld too, Persona just doesn't feel like a console game to me, but I'm sure I'll end up playing it anyway. Never know I might actually finish this one.

Pleased it's coming to the PS4 doesn't really matter if it uses the power of the PS4 just means more sells for atlus to people like me that doesn't have a PS3.

It's hard to get excited from what we've seen, though I like the look of the logo (Masayoshi Sutoh is clearly at the design helm to this one too, then) as Jay said the setting is shared with another great 'modern' RPG.

I'm interested in seeing whether Atlus are going to use the extra possibilities afforded by PS3/PS4 over PS2 to take Persona to new places, or whether that will happen through the way the game's fundamentally designed. The only problem I can see is that the Persona fanbase is so large right now that Atlus may play it safe, so not to upset any fans.

If you don't have a PS3, yes. I agree with Andyman in that these PS4 versions of PS3 and Vita games -- where said games are actually designed for Vita and PS3 anyway -- are largely pointless, though I suspect this is happening because of the western market.

Though I can't really fathom out why some games announced today were PS4 and Vita, when the PS3 could do those games with ease and PS4 has such tiny marketshare in Japan. My only guess is Sony's been giving publishers financial incentives to not support PS3.

PostSubject: Re: Persona 5 and P5: Royal Edition   Persona 5 and P5: Royal Edition EmptyMon 1 Sep 2014 - 21:36

I think there have been quite a few (non indie) cross gen titles that really have benefitted from the extra power (Wolfenstein, Lego Marvel, Battlefield 4 and AC IV pop to mind) so it might just be that I'm expecting a very similar experience to P3&4 that lowers my expectations of a next gen port. It would be interesting if they did make a significant leap though, but like you said I'm not sure they'll be brave enough.

Aye, I didn't think of the big budget AAA games but that's certainly a good case in point, though all those games, Battlefield aside, are practically identical on last gen and Wolfenstein is still 60fps on last gen so it's not an essential step up.

But yeah, a lot of the cross platform games announced today just aren't AAA big budget titles like The Phantom Pain.

With LEGO Marvel I think it's load times that's the problem with it on last gen.

Maybe they might use the touchpad in some way in the game doesn't just have to be about the power.

I think Jay meant with PS4 now being viable with a title such as Persona 5 it might of kept you from buying a PS4 as it was just on PS3 but now it's also on PS4. It make you upgrade if that was something you were looking forward to on your PS3 you can now play it on your PS4.

Pretty much! I don't own a PS3 either, and it's another game turning up on PS4 that I'd have considered buying a PS3 for.

It might be down to load times but it was laggy and crashed all too regularly. Worst LEGO game since PotC (which I could barely get through a level without a crash).

Also really not convinced the touch pad has or will ever contribute to a game in any real way. Maybe Tearaway but that's a very special game.

Touch pad works well in the infamous game's and is kinda a cool giant pause button for some.

A few other bits but it felt gratifying to press in the game and useful. Also escape plan uses it well as it becomes the VITA touch screen.

And more details did come, in the form of a proper trailer!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc_9r4wifFc

I'm loving the game's whole aesthetic so far - it's really reminding of TWEWY, and I'm digging that. The day to day scenes seem a lot busier visually, and they really look a treat. And the actual gameplay seems to be a lot more engaging than Persona 4's dungeon crawling. Still no release date, but I reckon Q4 2015 is a safe shout.

Even the menus look great! Smile

I had a quick concern there - do you think the PS3 version will be lacking compared to the PS4 version? I had an image of something akin to Shadow of Mordor happening where vital features were just omitted from the older consoles.

I don't think features will be missing, though I do worry for its performance. Games like Lego Marvel barely run on PS3 and I imagine that's not THAT poweful.

I did notice that the crowd models didn't have faces, so presumably they're using lower-detailed models to ensure that performance keeps up. I did worry that some of it was too busy for the PS3. They've probably been developing on PS3 for far longer than on PS4 though, so I'm still optimistic.

As awesome as that trailer was I'm more excited for this after hearing what the director say what the themes and general direction is going to be, hopefully the cast is properly fleshed out this time like persona 3 and not stale the entire game past their introductions like persona 4. Either way I'm hoping better integration of themes this time.

And it's about time the mascot was the superior cat! Dogs? Bears? Ha, it's time for the feline overlords to get the Persona treatment.

Forgot to mention this yesterday, but I was watching the announcement stream and they had a Japanese VA, likely the protagonist, introduce the trailer and I'm pretty sure it was the same VA as Lelouch from Code Geass. Just a neat point.

Kinda interesting news not about this game but might end up being a similar situation

Dragon Quest Heroes has been out in Japan for a while on PS3 & 4 and has been confirmed for western release now but seems to be no PS3 version coming here.

And looking at Persona 5 it's coming to both PS3 & 4 in Japan where the PS3 is still very much a live but over there but in the west you just have to look at sales number PS3 games aren't doing great. So will the P5 come here on PS3, as will it sale enough for Atlus to warrant it as you think a Dragon Quest would sale enough to warrant a PS3 release.
