| A year has passed since the launch of Microsoft’s & Sony’s offerings have come out to add to the Wii U in the 8th generation which a year has passed since all three have been on the market together. As someone who’s owned all three. I’m going to look back at all three systems and where they are going, I would of course like to hear your thoughts on the 8th gen systems. - Wii U:
I’m starting with the reason most of us are on this forum Nintendo and there Wii U which has just celebrated its second birthday in some regions.
Sorry Jas but I’m starting with salezz, so it didn’t start out great on the U with many saying it’s doomed but thankfully it’s picked up with the release of some big titles and has reached around 7.4million install base with New Super Mario Bros U being the best-selling game at 4.25m copies.
But the main reason we buy a games console is to play games and the U has a great year which is finishing its second birthday/starting its third year with Super Smash Bros for Wii U.
But how good are the games I can tell you Bayonetta 2 is great but that’s just my opinion, so to be unbiased here’s the Top 10 according to metacrtic 1. With 94 Super Smash Bros for Wii U 2. With 93 Super Mario 3D World 3. With 92 Rayman Legends 4. With 91 Bayonetta 2 5. With 90 The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD 6. With 90 Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition 7. With 89 Skylanders Swap Force 8. With 88 Mario Kart 8 9. With 88 Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut 10. With 87 Shovel Knight
With Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade being the worst game with a score of 11. But as you can see the gaming front has been great on the U be it retail with its small but generally good library and now an eShop which has started to show its quality.
With year three just on the horizon kicking off with SMASH then Captain Toad in the New Year, a new IP in Splatoon and hopefully a Zelda & Xenoblade it looks like this is a console to own for its Nintendo goodness as unfortunately 3rd party games are getting more scares on the system but who needs them as it’s not something I buy a Nintendo system for.
Overall a great game console with a good library of game with some big titles coming and sells picking up, it’s a great time to be a Wii U owner.
- Xbox One:
Now on to the Xbox One which will turn 1 in 2 day’s and what a year it’s had after a very poor start with Microsoft’s cockiness but after numerous price drops the ditching on kinect it has started to warrant it’s self on the market with 10million units shipped (rumours it’s sold about 7-8m to consumers) and out still pacing the 360 & caught up with the Wii U already.
So not all doom & gloom for any x-bot’s but again we games console (all in one entertainment device in this case) for games which its bestselling is Titanfall at around 2.25m, but here’s it’s Top 10 from metacrtic 1. With 91 Rayman Legends 2. With 88 Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition 3. With 88 Minecraft: Xbox One Edition 4. With 88 FIFA 14 5. With 87 Halo: The Master Chief Collection 6. With 87 Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor 7. With 86 Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition 8. With 86 Forza Horizon 2 9. With 86 Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition 10. With 86 Dragon Age: Inquisition
The worst being Fighter Within with 23,
So not the best first year of games (110 games including downloads I think) with most either ports or available elsewhere including its last gen counterpart the Xbox 360 but going forward the Xbox One does some have some quality titles coming Ori and The Blind Forest, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Halo 5, Fable Legends, Quantum Break and Scalebound.
Overall I think the Xbox One has had a tough year but with what coming from Microsoft’s gaming division now under Phi Spencer is good and shows reason to pick up a ONE and why they are still in the console war with Sony.
- PS4:
Now we come to the PlayStation 4 which just had its first birthday in some regions and what a first year it’s been with over 13million PS4s sole to consumers worldwide and out pacing the PS2 and breaking all sort of records . Sony did a great job capitalising on Microsoft’s mistakes at the start to give them self’s quite a large head start but as we know anything can happen in gaming.
But again we games consoles for games, has the first year been good for the PS4 out of its 140 games including downloads with bestselling being FIFA 15 with 3.5m but this is the best 10 1. With 96 GTAV 2. With 95 The Last of Us Remastered 3. With 91 Flower 4. With 90 Rayman Legends 5. With 90 Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition 6. With 90 Fez 7. With 89 Dragon Age: Inquisition 8. With 89 Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition 9. With 87 The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth 10. With 87 Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
The worst being Basement Crawl with 27.
So much like the Xbox One lot’s of ports that could have been found on its last gen counterpart the PS3 but there has been plenty play on it as has become my premiere console now for games such as Dragon Age but going forward the PS4 does look like it will have some great reasons to justify its purchase at an exclusive level with Bloodborne, The Order 1866, Until Dawn, Uncharted 4 and No Man’s Sky.
So overall I think Sony does have a bit of a fight on its hand with the Xbox One but with quality exclusive coming, I think they will delivery on the slogan of greatness awaits in 2015 it will be there.
- Final Thoughts:
So after looking back the Wii U looks the best places for games at the moment with neither the PS4ONE really showing why they've shipped about 25million due to what looks like a lack of meaningful games, hopefully 2015 is a better year for gaming all round be it on these three machines.
Long life gaming.
Also Rayman Legends and Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition are on all three top 10's, good games indeed.

| The admin team and I thought that mas's post might be better suited to the GNamer Community forum. (Balladit: Yes, "the admin. team". All one of us who aren't you. )My only question is this: we voted Pikmin 3 the best game of the Wii U's first year. Why isn't that in the Metacritic Wii U Top Ten?! |

Skylanders appears to have caused a malfunction in MetaCritic - they must have taken a lot of reviews from Dipshit Gamer into consideration. Having said that, there are a lot of decent games in that top 10; for the purpose of a couple of %s I can see that list being about right. (With Pikmin in, natch) |

| Ah yes, Dipshit Gamer. Featuring Vernon Kaye, Phil Fish, that bloke who sent Gabe Newell death threats, and most of the Internet. To repeat the comment I made in the Wii U news thread, about the Wii U two years on: - I wrote:
- I'd probably give it a B- myself. It has one 9/10 big game so far in my eyes, in MK8 (possibly another in Bayo 2, and I'm aware that I didn't like Pikmin 3 for its genre), and two downloadables. But the eShop aside, I seem to have fewer games for it at this point in its life than any Nintendo console apart from the N64 (but they were bona fide classics, mostly).
Lots of potential too, at this point, but it'll be interesting to see what remains next year. If we assume that Zelda makes it, along with XCX, that doesn't leave huge amounts. Starfox, I guess. |

| Pikmin 3 had 87 like Shovel Knight but slightly lower user score of 0.2 point's that it's number a 11 and skylanders is a 83 on PS360 but 79 on PS4 and no Xbox One reviews.
But if we ttok it out of the Top 10 and moved everything up one, I think that's a great 10 games there. |

| Ah, Skylanders. My 9-year-old cousin loves it to bits and spent a good portion of my parents' 60th birthday celebration telling me all about the plot of the last one. In other thoughts, I would have hoped that the Wii U's review breakdown would outstrip that of both of the other consoles. Nintendo have had a year head-start and, although it's better than the One's, the PS4's is probably better. Is that worth a slight concern? |

| Yes, I'd say it is. Nintendo effectively wasted a year's headstart on the competition. The Wii U could and should have capitalised on the "first of the new gen." thing, and have a healthy lead on both other consoles, both in terms of titles (which they arguably do) and sales (which they definitely don't).
Still, all the launches seem to have been lacklustre this generation. It's just that Sony sold theirs better. |

THIS. It's pretty telling that a year on that some of the folk who bought ps4 on launch aren't happy with their purchase & I can't blame them to be honest as Sony promised all this stuff but didn't fully deliver. I'm quite glad I waited until a few months ago to buy mine as the wait for the big games coming in 2015 isn't so bad, I just hope those can deliver. - masofdas wrote:

I really do hate that mentality of "if everyone isn't buying it then it must be bad" it's the same for other mediums too & it just simply isn't true. |

| Yep it is annoying about the whole if it isn't the main stream they it sucks.
On PS4 I am pleased with mine and the only things we didn't get was DriveClub at launch and had to wait for a year to get a version that didn't work properly and The Order was delayed but what people were saying was great at preview events so sooner it's delayed and is a good game then rushed. |

| I'm happy with mine also so far but I wasn't just talking about the games on ps4 it's more about certain system features the most recent one being share play where they hype it up to be this massive social game changer that can be used with any game & then it arrives and it's nothing more than a glorified demo session that only works with certain games.
They really did just piggy back off the DRM disaster that Microsoft had but they can't do that for the entire lifespan of the console.

| Well next year looks great for the PS4 and this event in December could help a lot but that's only something core gamers will know about and might get dripped back to some of there's friends on social media etc but not casual's like Sony says they want.
It was always going to be a glorified demo as you put it even when they showed it back in Feb 2013 but is annoying that some publishers can decide not to have it work for there games.
Also Microsoft's arrogance like if you can't afford a ONE buy a 360 didn't help them either. |

| Pretty sure they said about it being timed but like at E3 2013 when it was announced you had to have plus to play online it was slipped in during a bit when everyone was still clapping that you could play used games. |

| I'm redoing my thoughts etc but for year 2/3 of the 8th generation. - Wii U:
I’m starting with the reason most of us are on this forum Nintendo and there Wii U which has just celebrated its third birthday in some regions.
Sorry Jas but I’m starting with salezz, the Wii U has reached around a 11million install base with Mario Kart 8 being the best-selling game at 5.38m copies.
But the main reason we buy a games console is to play games and the U has had a so-so year with a great new IP near the start of the year in Splatoon and ending with an epic JRPG ending the year and year 4 looks to be a decent first half.
But how good are the games I can tell you Bayonetta 2 is great but that’s just my opinion, so to be unbiased here’s the Top 10 according to metacrtic
1. With 93 Super Mario 3D World 2. With 92 Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 3. With 92 Rayman Legends 4. With 91 Bayonetta 2 5. With 90 The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD 6. With 90 Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition 7. With 89 Skylanders Swap Force 8. With 88 Super Mario Maker 9. With 88 Mario Kart 8 10. With 88 Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut
With Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade being the worst game with a score of 11.
My opinion hasn’t changed much since last year on the Wii U. I don’t think it’s the best console to have on its own but alongside something else, the Nintendo exclusives make it worth picking up the Wii U especially with it’s now decent library.
- Xbox One:
Now on to the Xbox One which is now 2 years old and it’s had a strange 2 years. It’s had 5 official price drops in 2 years, ditched the Kinect and Microsoft no longer reporting numbers on the system, it may not look good but it’s still outpacing the Xbox 360 and rumoured to be on an install of 16m
So not all doom & gloom for any x-bot’s but again we buy games consoles (all in one entertainment device in this case) for games which its bestselling is Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare at 4.73m, with one of my favs on the system being Rise of the Tomb Raider but here’s it’s Top 10 from metacrtic
1. With 97 Grand Theft Auto V 2. With 95 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain 3. With 92 The Swapper 4. With 91 The Witcher III: Wild Hunt 5. With 91 Rayman Legends 6. With 90 Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition 7. With 90 Destiny: The Taken King 8. With 89 Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin 9. With 88 Ori and the Blind Forest 10. With 88 Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
The worst being Rugby 15 with 20,
A few ports still in the consoles Top 10 but this has shown that since the last year what has changed in gaming.
Overall I think the Xbox One has still had a tough time and Mr Spencer has even declared the console war this generation is over. But it continues to sale well under Phill who has done great things by talking about games & gamers, putting an okay UI and Backwards Compatibly which isn’t a big deal for me but adds to the package on Xbox One with some quality looking games coming in Gears of War 4, Halo Wars 2, ReCore and Quantum Break.
- PS4:
Now we come to the PlayStation 4 which also just turned two and has passed 30.2m unit’s sold which means at this point it’s out pacing every console ever part from the Wii which was on about 34m at this point.
The bestselling game is Grand Theft Auto V at 8.13m on the system, I’ve played lots of great games on my PS4 and know others have with exclusives such as Bloodborne but here is the Top 10
1. With 97 Grand Theft Auto V 2. With 95 The Last of Us Remastered 3. With 93 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain 4. With 92 The Witcher III: Wild Hunt 5. With 92 Bloodborne 6. With 92 Journey 7. With 91 Flower 8. With 90 Rayman Legends 9. With 90 Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition 10. With 90 Shovel Knight
The worst being Rugby 15 with 19,
So much like the Xbox One lots of ports that could have been found on its last gen counterpart the PS3 along with some quality looking games. 2016 could be a strange year for Sony as they have a huge lead and maybe have rested on their laurels a bit this year from their own studios but if they don’t have to rush them to bring games out then waiting may be best.
With likes of Uncharted 4, Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last Guardian, Street Fighter V to come but the big thing is VR which could be the thig that makes 2016 strange from Sony as will they just focus on that and screw up like they have done a few times in the past, even though I’m all for VR.
- Final Thoughts:
Hmm looking at the Top 10’s it is hard to tell why both the PS4ONE have a combined install base of 46m (EA reckon by the end of the year it be more like 55m) as a lot of what’s great on them are available elsewhere but I have enjoyed the past 2 years on PS4 a lot & looking forward 2016 in general and those exclusives on Xbox. But the best place for just exclusives remains the Wii U.
Long life gaming.
Also Rayman Legends again is in all three Top 10’s and got in our classics as well.
Be interested on everyones thoughts now 2 or 3 years on, will Balla still say B- |

| Triple Post
gJones posted something yesterday that got me thinking as this gen for PS4 and Xbox One at least is coming to an end.
I've had a PS4 since launch all the way up to the PS4 Pro, which I will look to sell moving on to PS5. The Xbox One umm well you all know I've had numerous of those but now game primarily on my Xbox One X which I will be doing right up to the launch of the Series X.
That now with 7 years past us, which one of the two would I recommend and some general thoughts.
PlayStation 4
The PS4 may have one of the best libraries on a console with something like 4000 games, which it has quite a few exclusives be it indies or the weird sort of exclusive by default Japanese stuff. Then you have the first party which you have 6 of the Top 10 on Opencritic being on PS4, going by critical feedback.
You could also take into account PSNOW which has hundreds of PS3 game on it, that looking back you'll have plenty to find and VR as well.
Looking forward might be a tad different as Sony will drop the PS4 almost right away in terms of support when the PS5 arrives, sure you'll get 3rd party as a EA aren't going to ignore that install base.
Even though I think Sony will drop games support, I can see them cutting the price of the PS4 and selling it as a budget system which has 4000 games on it which includes all these bangers, it worked for the PS2.
Xbox One
The Xbox One and why I've had so many is that for a long time it was just like a PS4 but with less and had the opposite problem of the Wii U where that only got 1st party the Xbox One only really got 3rd party.
Since Spencer has taken over this has changed it still has a smaller library still, Japanese support is still mixed but its value is the difference due to Game Pass and 3rd party games often are cheaper on Xbox One than PS4.
Which also brings me to the future as the Xbox One SAD and X have been discontinued, also I'd think One S will be as well soon as Series S is real that unlike Sony where it still tries to sell you a PS4 (Nintendo also done this with 2DS) new for cheap. Is that game support will still be on the system for a few years and I wouldn't bet against always with XCloud.
Thoughts
I would normally say go where your friends are as well but if you're picking up one of these now that might not matter, then cross-play and cross-gen play it is changing that even this soon might not be a thing and I can play on my Series X and someone on here a PS5 another Switch but still enjoy multiplayer together for Apex Legends.
You got things like the UI and Controller but that is subjective.
So I think it comes down to PS4 has the bigger library, more diverse games due inides & Japan & VR, first party that is highly praised but looking ahead it is short lift for what's to come to PS4.
Where Xbox One will give better value as you can play OG & 360 games, access to 200+ games via Game Pass with new ones for the next few years, and cheaper games as well but smaller library of games with the best stuff being available elsewhere and I don't mean Halo on PC I mean Metal Gear Solid V is on PS4. |

| It's a hard one as if I gave you £250 sent you in town, you'd come back with more games for a Xbox One and still quality ones but mainly 3rd party but you'd also get a 4k UHD player.
But if you went into town with the same amount for a PS4 you'd come back with less but what you have be some of the highest rated games around. |

| If you sent me into town with £250 I'd come back with a PS4 and no games, unless there's a bundle deal on.
I'd take the PS4 personally - there are far more great games. It's a bit like the PS2 of this generation, most gamers have one and it benefitted from a wealth of Japanese exclusives. Game Pass is a great idea, but my Internet is terrible so would be a pain having to wait for them to download.
For £250 though, I'd probably get a Wii-U and every game for it. |

| Yeah it is a lot like the PS2 but with good games It's a difficult one as I'm getting both next gen and I doubt I'll buy games at launch for the Series X because of Game Pass that's what sold me with this recent showcase. Where I'd be getting a PS5 for Spider-Man, Horizon 2, Ratchet etc PS5 now very much how I see Nintendo now for the exclusives. |
