There's only really two ways you can go at the start of Dark Souls; any other route kills you right quick, so there's no danger of thinking you're on the right path, and although one is harder than the other going for either bell first is a valid option.

Aye, what Drunka said. I went the wrong way at the beginning of Dark Souls, and after getting slaughtered for half an hour I decided to go another direction and continued onwards.

There's never a wasted path either - you'll come across some sort of reward, much like in Metroid.
