Yesterday I Drank

So, you know what I've drank this recently? Not booze. A couple of weeks into 2020, my pal Matty and I noticed we hadn't drank so far and, being that we're both on a big gym health kick, we decided to try to do a full year without alcohol and see if we miss it and whether it has a big impact on our health. I genuinely think I might just stop. . .

I used to drink a lot when I was sad. I'm happier now so I don't feel the need.

I'm not 100% abstinent, but I generally only drink once every two or three months. And by drink I mean, I have 1 pint. It's not really made a big change to my health but that's just me. And to be fair, my metabolism isn't normal.

I've never really been into alcohol though. I mean, I liked some whiskeys and there's the odd Cider that I really like. But in general there just aren't all that many that I'm dead keen on. I reckon you'll last a long time without.

All right you perfect human specimens, leave it out. I'm doing Dry February because I need it.  Mind you, I neither drink because I'm sad nor solely because I like the feeling of booze on my head: I generally prefer the tastes of alcoholic drinks to non-alcoholic ones.  Just not beer, which is bobbins.

Yesterday I drank: loads.  I had a work event at which we were having wine pushed towards us from 1:30.  I don't remember half the evening, fell over and did something to my ankle, 'treated' The Lady to a long rambling 'phone call in which I apparently had some sort of breakdown, was violently sick, and had a horrendous hangover for most of today.  Dry February was well-timed, but that is not good and I'm worried I have a problem.

Pretty sure that work events that start boozing that early are tough for most, we had one last Thurs and as someone who can absorb quite a lot of the stuff I wasn’t feeling fresh the next day (admittedly after starting at 12.30 I got home at midnight, so y’know).

I wouldn't sweat it - work events can get really messy. I had a pretty similar experience to yours back at my Christmas do and after a day of utter dread at my antics, it was totally fine. You probably weren't the only one!

I probably wasn't, but all the same, I cringed when somebody came down to 'check on me' with lines like, 'What a night eh?'

Anyway, Dry February has started (with a break on Sunday to entertain The Sister), and it'll be good to have a rest... although I've already craved wine on a couple of occasions, so yep, probably a good thing!

I'm working on a plug-in for the forum to automatically censor any foul language. To paraphase Sakurai, GNamer is for good boys and girls.

On topic, I bought a bottle of Irn-Bru 1901 which is the biggest long-con marketing campaign I've ever seen. For those not in the know, Irn-Bru chose to change their recipe when the sugar tax hit to avoid bumping up their prices like regular Coke. A lot of people despise the new recipe - I was never bothered personally as I'm much more into their Pepsi Max/Coke Zero equivalent, Irn Bru Xtra. They've now rereleased the old recipe for a quid more than the new stuff and it's seemingly been doing well for itself. Honestly, think I still prefer Xtra!

I miss IRN BRU.

I had two alcohol substitutes over the weekend. One was an aromatised alcohol-free red from Sainsbury's. It was fine, and it tricked my brain into thinking I was drinking at book club. The other was some acai berry-based concoction and never again. Woodstar, it was called. Avoid.

Is there no import bits in any supermarkets or shops you've been into? I know that's a thing here, natch, and in the US too from what I've gathered, but maybe that's not a Japanese thing?

It genuinely sounds like the brand name of one of those £2.50 three litre bottles of cheap cider I bought as a desperate student, so I'm not surprised!

There are import sections but thats like Cadburys and other big names.

Mocha with oat milk. Ehhhhhhhhh. This is something I'd probably get used to if I drank oat milk all the time.

What are people's favourite milk substitutes and why?

I quite liked almond milk - I prefer proper milk, natch, but it's worth a go if you're looking for a milk substitute. It's a little bit sweet and there's obviously a nutty taste to it, but I think that would go well with coffee if that's why you're after it.

I'm mostly a tea person, but when I need a caffeine hit mocha's my preferred choice. Coffee's too bitter for me unless I deluge it in milk and sugar. I'm a fan of marzipan, so I'll give almond milk a try!

Did you get round to giving it a go?

I drink my coffee black, and some roasts I dont even put sugar in. I think I legit like coffee.

I rarely consume milk these days apart from a protein milk post-workout.
