Bravely Default II - Bravely Second didn't happen

Announced this morning for Switch in 2020 a sequel to Bravely Default produced by Team Asano, developed by Claytechworks, music by Revo.

Now, this has all-new Heroes of Light, where Bravely Second was the cast of Bravely Default right?

That’s right. This is... odd. Bit of a Xenoblade situation, but not because X was the spin-off there and 2 was the sequel-ish.

Oh well! The heroes look like anime figurines, the towns are still hand-painted, and best of all, Revo are back! I am very much up for this.

As happy as I am that this franchise lives on this better not be like Xenoblade X.   I need my Ringabel Interdimensional Police Force sequel tease answered dammit!

Also Second was better than Default.  The choice to be half-parody half-loveletter to the genre was the correct one and I'd be very sad if they just went back to playing everything completely straight.

Still I'll take a sequel than not! I honestly thought the franchise was dead after Second's sales figures, glad to see that's not the case.

Never played the series but this looks nice, count me in.

It's like the old Final Fantasies, but with a system that lets you save or spend turns, and a host of QoL improvements. Athrun's right that Second was better than Default, so hopefully this'll continue the upward trend (ignoring Octopath).

My take was that it was a bit more like FFX/FFX-2 and then this is the next installment in the series. I could be wrong.

Perhaps I should play my copies of Bravely Default and Bravely Second.

Think I've read that as well that Bravely Second was basically Final Fantasy X-2, where this new game is Final Fantasy XI in comparison.

At this stage, my tentative advice would be: leave Default, look up the plot, and play Second. You’ll miss out on some amazing story beats and set-pieces, but you’ll also miss out on the dogshit second half of the game, and given the limited time available to you you don’t have time for half a JRPG of dogshit.

I think I've squeezed most of the substantial content out of D2 and maybe - just maybe! - I'll escape this GaaS hell.

The Switch for me in 2021 will be RPG but certainly reminds me more of 3DS etc

I forgot this was meant to be released this year! Yeah, even without COVID, I'd not have been surprised to see this get pushed back to be honest.

Looking pretty swish though! What's more, for a moment when the first trailer was playing I thought they'd finally worked out how to show off a Bravely game - but no, we got the details and the commentary and bleah. Whatever, I'll be picking this up in Feb. unless Squeenix get it disastrously wrong.

Demo just come out and think it can be continued on to the actual game along with unlocking some reward points

Tempted, tempted... but I feel like I should try and clear some eShop games first.

Preorders started to appear this week and I'm surprised no special edition but because of that found for under £40

As it's not far out and the demo is 5hrs long & all of chapter 1, I'm just waiting for the actual game to come out now.

I might give the demo a go for this one. With the original BD, the demo was a separate thing and kind of fed into the main game in weird ways, so I stupidly tried to rinse it of content and ended up putting myself off playing the main game.

This time, if the demo is the actual opening and I end up liking the game I'll be more inclined to keep going.

If you can continue on like with Dragon Quest isn't as bad but can't find the info on that so I just don't want to do the same 5hrs twice.

Surely you can, right? If they brought out a demo that was the start of the game in this day and age and one couldn't continue . . .

Also I think it's the same/a similar team behind Octopath, who allowed that.

I'm a bit cautious about this (hence the counterpick). People seemed to be sniffy about the demo. from what I've seen, saying a lot of it felt copy-pasted from BD1. Still hoping it's good, natch.

Like, story beats? Or just mechanics? Either could kinda make sense, though I'd hope it deviates as it proceeds.

I've not heard much about the mechanics. I don't think they've changed much. It's the characters, apparently: copy-pastes of Default's party from what I've read.

Also the thing is even if reviews etc are saying a bit copy and paste, are they really going to give the game 7's or lower if everything else is good? I don't think so.

I mean, they give Naughty Dog games 9s and 10s and they're all the same game.
