Super GNamer All-Stars 2020

The thread title isn't great as I couldn't think of a good name but I'd like to see what you come up with my forum idea.

The premise is a smash or kart or maybe something else clone set around a theme of your choice but must have two 20's.

Example Balla might come up with a rhythm game with 20 Square Enix RPG characters and 20 music tracks, which he would tell us the characters and tracks and so on.

I see what you guys come up with before posting one myself.

I think I follow the idea...

Right, here's mine:

The 2020 FIGHTING GAME ALL-STARS, ER, GAME

20 fighters from 20 different fighting games. I know this is basically Smash Bros, but I want this in the style of a classic fighting game.

Yes, I'm including Smash in this line-up and I will die on that hill, you casuals. This will get niche though, so strap in. These are in the order I thought of them, by the way, so it'll be a randomly ordered selection.

1 - Street Fighter: Ryu, duh. You can make an argument for Ken, Chun-Li or even Guile, but your argument would be wrong. This is an all-stars, so we're taking the biggest names only.

2 - Tekken: Heihachi. This one is tough as you've got a case for Kazuya or Jin, but I think Heihachi would be the most recognisable.

3 - Mortal Kombat: Scorpion. I mean, you could easily have Sub Zero, but I think "GET OVER HERE!" makes Scorpion that little bit more iconic.

4 - Smash: Captain Falcon. Okay, hear me out - yes, Mario is the obvious choice, but I think if you're talking about a "Smash" character, you can't look past the Captain. F-Zero doesn't exist anymore and Captain Falcon is essentially a Smash Bros. character at this point. His moveset is entirely Smash original too.

5 - Dragon Ball FighterZ: Goku. Next! Well, technically there's eleventy billion different Gokus in that game, so we'll take basic Super Saiyan Goku if you want to get specific.

6 - Fatal Fury: Terry Bogard. He's in Smash, what more evidence do you need?

7 - The King of Fighters: Whilst it features Terry, it's a different series. Kyo Kusanagi is your main man for KoF.

8 - Guilty Gear: Sol Badguy. He's been in every GG game, as far as I can tell.

9 - Killer Instinct: I'm going with Fulgore here. It's him or Jago, but Fulgore just looks cooler and that gets him the ticket he needs to get in.

10 - Injustice: Batman. It's him or Supes, but you just know all the nerds will eat up the chance to have Batman smack down Ryu and Goku.

11 - Darkstalkers: Morrigan. She still turns up in the likes of Marvel vs Capcom. Plus, she's apparently Scottish???

12 - Dead or Alive: Kasumi. There's a strong case to be made for Ryu Hayabusa, but we can't have two Ryus in the same game.

13 - Soul Calibur: It's Ivy, right? I think she's more interesting than the likes of Mitsurugi, who we'll basically have in this game anyway with my next pick...

14 - Samurai Shodown: Haohmaru. Side note - genuinely tickled at the fact that he's going to guest in Soul Calibur 6 considering his similarities with Mitsurugi.

15 - Marvel vs Capcom: Bugger it - if we're having Smash, we're having Mahvel, baby. Let's take Wolverine here. Ryu and Mega Man are the biggest names from the Capcom side, but I think Wolverine's the biggest name from the Marvel end of things and it'd be much more fun having a Marvel character there to square off against Bats.

16 - Blazblue: I know next to nothing about this series, but it's a huge fighting game series so it wouldn't be right to leave it out. Supposedly there's two main protagonists, a hero and a heroine. I'll take the heroine called Noel Vermillion as she's got a neat design and this has been a very dude oriented list so far, but more so because the guy's name is Ragna the Bloodedge and I'm not including anybody who calls themselves that in this masterpiece of a game I'm creating.

17 - Virtua Fighter: Again, I know nothing about this series, but I'll go for Sarah Bryant on the basis that she has her own Wikipedia page and the other characters do not. I know Akira is meant to be the main dude, but he looks as dull as dishwater.

18 - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Starting to struggle now, so let's go for mass crossover appeal. Let's take DIO because he's in all the funny memes and the Internet will LOVE IT. Next!

19 - Naruto: Ultimate Ninja: Naruto. NARUTO VS BATMAN. The nerds will LOVE IT. Next!

20 - Def Jam: Fight for NY: SNOOP DOGG. Smoke weed every day, ha ha 420 blaze it boys!


...I struggled at the end there.

I like it! It'll take a while to build up headway, but I reckon we can get a few good ideas. I could probably come up with several...

I like your idea Mas, actually, but I don't think I could do Squeenix justice so I'm going to take it and put a twist on it: ELITE BEAT NINDIES. A rhythm collaboration between various Nindies, with a track from each. 20 games, 20 tracks. There'll be a bit of repetition from Drunka's recent project (go comment on it if you haven't lads/lass), so bear with. Also: does not work with Goose Game due to the fluid pulse of Debussy's tracks.


1. Baba Is You and Wall Is Stop, which sounds just like a tutorial to me. Slow pace: just move with the beat and get your bearings.

2. Shovel Knight and Strike the Earth: an excellent first level tune becomes the first level proper. Tap and slide your way through this upbeat opener.

3. Crypt of the Necrodancer and Disco Descent: the music develops another gear, to let you know things are getting serious. Banger, natch.

4. Undertale and Heartache, the first real boss fight features a slide into 3/4.

5. Deltarune and Field of Hopes and Dreams. Of course the two Toby Fox pieces sit together. This is a good 'now the game's really heating up' level theme to my mind.

6. Wargroove and Theme of Wargroove, as you journey across the lands in search of your (slightly more concrete now?) goal.

7. Hollow Knight and Dung Defender, the game's second boss level. What sounds like a strange rhythm that's actually standard old 4/4 for most part, but watch for those later changes!

8. Hotline Miami and Electric Dreams, another slightly more off-kilter rhythm, this could make for a good interlude between levels.

9. Overcooked and Ice, the traditional ice level!

10. Yooka-Laylee and Kartos' Theme. Got to have a bit of David Wise in there, with some fun syncopation to throw the unwary player off.

11. Ori and the Blind Forest (I'm going to say it counts as indie, although this is sketchy - I'm running out of games to pick!) Restoring the Light, the dramatic mid-game boss theme. Quite possibly this is an unwinnable fight.

12. A Hat in Time and Time Rift, another interlude theme. Potentially signifies the protagonist losing heart after the previous boss battle.

13. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Gears of Fortune. If Time Rift is a downturn in fortunes, here we're picking back up. Possibly a transformation sequence or something.

14. Voez and Eastern Horoscope, from one rhythm game to another! This is a chase through a futuristic city or something.

15. Night in the Woods and Astral Assault, as darkness covers the land.

16. Dead Cells and Clock Tower, definitely a later-game level this.

17. Into the Breach and Cataclysm, the build-up to the final boss.

18. Iconoclasts and Ivory Beast, a dramatic boss fight of nightmarish proportions. Two phases, with the second starting from 1:38.

19. Celeste and Reach for the Summit, the 11-minute final level proper in which you save the world from destruction. probably.

20. Sayonara Wild Hearts and Wild Hearts Never Die: the perfect epilogue theme.


I have now officially spent too long hunting through indie soundtracks today.

1 Master Chief from Halo as he's the Xbox mascot

2 Arbiter from Halo he's not really a bad guy any more but felt we sort of needed one plus he'd use a sword compared to MC with an Assault Rifle

3 Kait Diaz from Gears, shes the new lead of the Gears series

4 General RAAM from Gears, fan favourite and another bad guy

5 Steve from Minecraft, not my thing but Minecraft is huge

6 Avatar from the Xbox Dashboard, will work like a Mii but will look like how you've made in the app

7 Nathan Zachary from Crimson Skies, will play a lot like Nathan Drake in PlayStation All-Stars

8 Hero/Villain from Fable, I'm thinking sort like Monster Hunter with sort of this is the default look which can switch between if you want Hero or Villain along with Male and Female options

9 Jago from Killer Instinct, will play like a traditional fighter and Dark Jago will be an option

10 Joule from ReCore, I feel the robots will make her a really interesting character maybe a tad like Olimar in SMASH  

11 Blinx from Blinx, somehow will use the time mechanic in fights

12 Senua from Hellblade, Swords and stuff

13 BattleMech from MechAssault, will be slower than most fighters due to the size but rather strong

14 Conker from Conker, his moves will be based on popular films maybe a lot of MCU stuff

15 Joanna Dark from Perfect Dark, will play sort like Zero Suit Samus or more nimble Kait due to lack of armour

16 Kaim from Lost Odyssey, you always need a swordsman

17 Nanashi from Phantom Dust, you'll use cards to fight and you can customise your load-out before fights

18 Kameo from Kameo, she'll able to morph between the different abilities

19 Agent from Crackdown, this will be Terry Crews

20 Diddy Kong from Diddy Kong Racing, SMASH gets Banjo and Xbox gets Diddy seems a fair deal

I can come up with a few more due to recent purchases on MS part like Raz from Psychonauts, more of RARE IP's eg a Battletoad and some games I associate with Xbox like Ninja Gaiden which would mean Ryu Hayabusa joining in

God of War, but with all the characters from WCW/NWO World Tour on the N64.

Kratos is replaced by Scott Steiner.

I don't get that at all, but it does give me another idea: PANTHEON COMBAT.  20 deities, 20 faiths.

Have to be a bit more careful here.  Obviously no/limited oblique representation of the monotheistic modern gods because we're trying to make a game, not attract pointless controversy.

An angel perhaps from Christianity, or something out of Revelations

Finally, the Grim Reaper, from various beliefs, as something of an unlockable final boss.

While I'm surprised your idea hasn't actually happened yet, I can't see Nintendo ever allowing this.

Well my idea sort of has with the current Killer Instinct having Arbiter, RAAM and one of the Battletoads.

Just talking OG Xbox, you remember how IPs they've got especially due to who MS have bought. I reckon something a guest character in Bleeding Edge will happen, also funnily enough the head of Xbox at IGN started tweeting about some of the old IPs should come back like Viva Pinata.

I want to see a Musuo game with all of Batman's villains battling over Gotham City - leading armies of goons into urban battlefields to take over a city map. Tactical strategy stuff - there can be a Batman story mode where you try to take back control, sure, but the colour of the villains is what makes it interesting.

The Joker
Obviously he'd be in there, and if they want to give him an over-the-top Omega Force moveset, they can go full Loony Toons.

Two Face
Flip a coin, there are two different movesets/ playstyles for if you're a villain this turn.

Commissioner Gordon
The ultimate villain, the police force. Gun down minorities! Protect the inequalities which perpetuate suffering in our societies! Only pursue criminals who can't afford to buy their way out of trouble!

I like all these so far! Especially Jay's fighters in a fighting game compilation - there are already compilations of other characters within that, so it's like some kind of compressed fighter terrine.

But yeah, you'd play little mini segments from all your favourites, and totally ignoring any superior game design from Japan, featuring

• Manic Miner - 1983 - also including Jet Set Willy - Jump over a thing moving at the same speed! Try and get past the Banyan Tree! Complete the original ZX Spectrum version which had a game breaking bug!
  
• Atic Atac - 1983 - Complete the Key! Navigate 5 rooms without taking damage! Don't get lost!
  
• Jetpac - 1983 - but really this is for Solar Jetman, which is the best game of all time yous are fucking eejits - Complete the first level of Jetpac! Get 10 Crystals in the Bonus Stage (you won't)! Get snotty at all of the people who bought Rare Replay and immediately ignored it!
  
• Sabreman - 1984 - where you also get Knight Lore and Underworlde and the wizardy one - Finish the Amulet! Stack all the blocks! Go up and right and mean it and not actually up and left!

• Sensible Soccer - 1992 - Although really SWOS. Win a match! Score from the halfway line with a winger! Play as Craig Ramage!
  
• Cannon Fodder - 1993 - Get through the first level unscathed! Use the skidoo! Avoid newspaper controversy!
  
• Worms - 1995 - but you also get 2 and Armageddon - Hit a worm with a bazooka! Do some cool ninja roping! Just anything it's Worms!
  
• WipEout - 1995 - plus the second and third ones - Complete the first race! Don't be sick! Play F-Zero instead!
  
• Tomb Raider - 1996 - Plus the three after it - Beat the T Rex! Complete the Scion! Lock the butler in the meat fridge!
  
• Goldeneye - 1997 - Complete the facility! Power weapons on Facility! Push Sean Bean off a small platform!
  
• Grand Theft Auto - 1997 - also including the London add-on - Avoid ontroversy! Avoid Controversy! Avoid Controversy!
  

I would be very up for that one, having not played most of those very much if at all.

I'm surprised someone beyond a commodore 64 mini, haven't done a UK pack.

Bear in mind that I don't like strategy games much. I had Worms 3D on the Wii and barely played it - I'm not sure that counts.

Scandalous that there's folk who haven't played Sensible Soccer, Micro Machines, Cannon Fodder and Worms!

Jimbob's idea is a cracker. 

I've actually played all of the 90s games that Jimbob listed. I was pretty arse at Cannon Fodder but I do have a soft spot for it.

These have all been fun to read so far.

I'm pretty happy to be a national traitor at the moment.

I don't think TCK means you should be playing them to swell up with a sense of national pride but because they are absolute must play classics, let's put it this way it'd be like being a Nintendo fan but you've never played a single Mario game.

Sort of makes sense but I know you've not played Halo but like FPS, that I think Balla can sort be let off due to his age and consoles he's has access to.

I have played Halo though.
