Never really played this, was keen on a Switch port anyway, but being a remake I'm down.

I haven't played the original either. I planned to probably play the SNES version eventually, and this remake looks nice but I'm not overly excited for it. Why not just make a completely new entry in the series? I doubt the original has really aged that badly. Could have just stuck that on the NSO.

I played a fair bit of it on VC but never completed it, it's one of those that I'd always say I wanna return to but I know I never will so a nice new remake is exactly the way to do it.

I think I played the opening of this back when on Virtual Console but I never stuck with it strangely - well up for giving this a proper go though. I love how they've done a great job at retaining the visual style of the original game.

I never bought it on the VC whenever it released, and I've been hoping for a chance to play on Switch. I'm hopeful this will have some small quality of life touches that will make me glad to pay for this version rather than just being given the SNES game for free.

While it's neither the Mario RPG I most wanted to see revamped nor the new game in the series I really wanted, I'm keen on this. We haven't had a new release of an actual Mario RPG since Mario & Luigi spiralled down the plughole, and this is definitely going to be better than the slow dull trek that was Dream Team Bros. Here for it.

This is exciting because it always felt like a 'forgotten about' Mario game, as it was strangely named with never-again-seen characters. And because the original wasn't released in PAL regions (apart from on VC) it feels like one of those magical NTSC releases from my childhood that I didn't think I'd get to own.

I'm basically in the same boat as Rum. Also, I've been putting off playing Paper Mario because if I'm gonna go back and play the old Mario RPGs I should do it right.

I've always put off playing the SNES version of this because I wanted a physical update (very familiar story with Chronotrigger - missed the DS port)
Very very excited to play this remake!
Also, for those that haven't played it, Paper Mario on the NSO N64 is a really great way to play jt

I was waiting for a way to play SMRPG first, then I'll have a crack at PM. Then they need to give me a way to play TTYD . . .

They'll release an upscaled version for sixty quid on Switch 2 and I'll buy it and have a great time.

Probably the one and only purely upscaled game I'd buy to be honest.

Anyway, I got this for Christmas. It both looks lovely and feels old. The writing is noticeably weirder than you'd expect from Nintendo, especially now - and I think that and the aesthetics are still going carry it. The areas it suffers in are mostly just ones where other Mario RPGs/games have come along and done it better, e.g. Mario not speaking, not being able to jump on a foe to start a battle.
As for QoL stuff, the game has an easy mode and autosaves, and an item that tells you when a hidden item is nearby. You get to back out of the first boss encounter if you're not ready for it too. That's what I've seen so far.

This was also a Christmas game for me, but Wonder awaits first. I'll be popping in here after and gobbling up all your RPG takes.

I'm about halfway through I think, in almost six hours. I'd forgotten just how short this game was, but that's no bad thing: unlike some JRPGs there's no fat on these bones, bar the odd slightly circuitous dungeon (Kero Sewers this means you ). It's the sort of JRPG I'd imagine that even those less fond of the genre on here might like for that reason. Plus, I've heard tell of content not in the original...

I've been plugging away at this off and on over the last couple of weeks and reckon I'm getting near the end now.
It's been a grand time - really lovely visual style and definitely agree with the earlier point made about the writing. It's got that zany charm that Squaresoft games had in the mid 90s - it does one of my favourite things in RPGs where you can say "no" to questions where the only right answer is "yes", but rather doing the Pokemon thing of "oh, don't be silly" and repeating the question, there's little scenes that play out before putting you on the right track again.
I've not ran into any of the new content - I'm pretty sure the big Final Fantasy style superboss secret was in the original (he pasted me quickly, for what it's worth).

Small extra content spoiler:
It seems to be all in the post-game, and doesn't really seem to include any new areas.
"Zany Squaresoft charm" nails it I think. Not a perfect title, but a fun reminder of times past.
I waited until I'd beaten the Big Bad to come back and deal with the superboss. Smashed him.

Finished this off over the weekend and tackled all the post-game stuff which was a nice little challenge after an admittedly very easy main adventure.
Post-game spoilers:
Rematching the bosses was interesting - the fights felt way more interesting than the initial encounters and actually had me playing about with my equipment and accessories a little bit.
The bomb lad's rematch was actually the toughest I'd say - it was more a gimmick battle in that you couldn't really damage him and had to smack the bombs with a successful action command to turn them around so they'd blow him up instead. The fact that the bombs would instantly kill you unless you nailed the pretty tight window for blocking them made it a tough little fight!
As much as it was fairly easy, seeing Culex in 3D was delightful alongside getting a great remix of that classic Final Fantasy battle theme.
