| Honourable Mentions - Games (5 contributors)We split them apart this year. Did you have many games to mention honourably? (Spoiler: yes.) - This year's underdogs:
Before Your Eyes - "The best game that came to PSVR2 even if a port, but this new way to play it made so much sense."
Chants of Sennaar - “The stealth and backtracking weren’t my favourites, which is a shame because the linguistics visuals and plot on their own would have been an easy top-five pick. As it is, this is without doubt the most interesting game I played in 2023.”
Disney Illusion Island - "Decent my first Metroidvania."
The Finals - "This surprised me as I wasn't fussed about it at all from it's initial reveal, then randomly I saw a Dark Souls streamer playing it one day which gave me the push to try the open beta on it's final weekend. It hits the same things I loved about R6 Siege in that you can be really creative and out think your opponents & not just rely on the fps part of the game."
Metroid Fusion - "Thanks to this being added to NSO, I got to play this great Metroidvania for the first time."
Pikmin 4 - "A bit too breezy for my Pikmin tastes but it was a charming/fun time."
Starfield - "The big Xbox game we've been promised finally"
Suika Game - "Incredibly addictive, does that make it good? I'm not sure but either way I couldn't stop going back to this simple but lovely game."
WarioWare: Move It! - “Hasn’t been out for long enough to make my top five for the year, but might do in hindsight. This is a top co-op game on Switch.”
- Games of yore:
Chained Echoes - “Played just too late in 2022 for me to vote for it there, else I would’ve. This is a “traditional” turn-based JRPG that does a load of things, from story to battling to giant mechs to enemy design, differently enough and interestingly enough for any fan of the genre to take an interest. In my opinion, better than 2023’s trad-JRPG revival Sea of Stars.”
Death Stranding - "I hate to say it... but the Strand type game is a success and I want more. Kojima's wanky story can fuck off, though." (Timely! - Ed.)
Fire Emblem Fates Revelation - "More FE and I got the Ol'3DS out for a bit."
A Hat in Time - "A joy to play, solid 3D platformer with some great writing, lovely music and perhaps one of the greatest single levels in gaming with the Murder on the Owl Express."
Knockout City - "We really fucked up as a society when we allowed this game to die a death, much like Rocket League it was always instantly fun whether you'd been playing all week or just once in a while."
The Last of Us Part 1 - "Okay I'm cheating already as I have played TLoU before, but this is the 2022 remake that cemented its place in my Top 3 Games of All-Time."
Lego Marvel Super Heroes - "I've had a lot of fun playing through this with my daughter, despite the fact she spent most of her time refusing to help it was the perfect co-op game. Besides that it has a hub area which you can just fly around at will which is great fun, plus it spawned the name "Overgine" for "Wolverine" which I found hilarious."
The Messenger - "Played this after Sea of Stars and I think I had a better time with it than SoS! Maybe it's the Ninja Gaiden fan in me enjoying a more tame version of that series, but this was a good time and well worth checking out."
Oxenfree - "The sequel came out in 2023 and whilst I did enjoy it didn't quite reach the heights of the first game which played through again the week before its release, still a really intriguing and chilling game."
Portal 1 & 2 - "It was my first time playing these games this year and unsurprisingly they're fantastic. Really clever puzzles that make use of a brilliant mechanic and genuinely very funny, an all timer."
Powerwash Simulator - "Dropped at the tail end of the year on PS+ and gave me some very zen times as I cleaned a virtual garden or something."
What the Golf? - "The seasonal updates have kept me coming back and whislt I should probably save them up to play all at once I can't help but go back for a dose of wacky golf fun."
- My thoughts:
[kingofthecosmos]My, GNamer really is full of games.[/kingofthecosmos] If I'm picking out one thing to highlight from this surge of comments, it's that the 'is addictive the same as good?' debate is one I'm interested in exploring further, somewhere else. GNew Year's Resolutions (5 contributors)A healthy number of y'all got behind this slightly maligned category, so thank you! Not many lines of text so I'm just going to stick 'em out here: " Stream. This is something I tell myself I'm gonna do every few weeks and always stop myself for one reason or another but ultimately when I have done it in the past I've always enjoyed it, even though barely anyone watches, I also find it a good way to try a wider variety of games." "I said I'd up my japanese study yesterday but then I met Mercy and mostly studied Spanish instead. So this year I'm gonna get serious with the ol' Nihongo." "Relax more. I spent 2023 doing a lot of worrying and stressing, so I think a more laissez-faire lifestyle will do wonders for my mental health in 2024." “To stop italicising media names on here. It’s a holdover from NGamer and its forebears, but 90% of the time doesn’t actually add anything.” "After the last few years I've given up planning anything." Some really creditable goals in the new year! I can relate to the Japanese one, I've taken up the ol' Duolingo Duolingo myself and have definitely begun learning languages in the past for a girl. And a big hug for our last commenter. Whether he likes it or not. |

| Those post why Cappa the Funniest one of us, with help from Buska.
Some on the honourable from me there I did end up voting for, though doubtful many others voted for my 13th favourite game of the year, that may as well be here.
I know Jay is Death Stranding. We've not really talked-about it, know ya got the platinum (nice) where I've only got 69% (nice) of the trophies but I love the story and the even more bonkers second one I'm downfor over the gameplay which I still really like, why like my 4th favourite game ever.
Feeling lot of the resolutions (4K for Switch 2 am I right?) as I do want to stream more as well and like off this week but nope haven't, and certainly need to stop stressing myself after 2023 (though 2024 not started great with darn teeth). |

| Those teeth may get another mention at some point. Not here though. The Philips CD-i Award for Best Nontendo Game (5 voters, 21 votes)By most accounts this was a stonking year for games, on and off Switch. Here we go, then, with resolutely off Switch... for the most part. - Fifth Place:
Remnant 2 - 5 points (1 vote, 1 first place)You said: "It's RE4 meets Dark Souls.”
- Fourth Place:
= RoboCop: Rogue City - 6 points (2 votes, 0 first places)You said: “A bit of recency bias may be creeping in here & bumping it up a spot or two in my top 5 but it's just great fun and a must play for anyone who is a fan of the films.”
"Shame Buska hasn't got a current gen system as he'd love this and also be giving it points."= Street Fighter VI - 6 points (2 votes, 0 first places)You said: “To me, a fighting game needs three things to succeed in this day and age. One, it needs to have a great starting roster. SFVI nails this with all the familiar faces you'd expect to see alongside some new highlights - warrior woman Marisa is ace and the enigmatic JP looks the business even if I'm useless with him - so check that one off the list.
Two, it needs to have a good offering in single player casual content. Whilst online battles are where your longer lasting playerbase will settle, I think for it entice people in and hopefully convert them into said longer lasting playerbase, you need a good chunk of solo content to learn the ropes and spend some time with the game by yourself first. SFVI once again ticks the box here - World Tour was a surprisingly good time and roaming about the streets getting into punchups with random goons scratched a little Yakuza itch, I felt.
Three, it needs to not be incomprehensible to newbies. I always felt Mortal Kombat did a better job than any other fighting game in this category as it had some really robust tutorials. Street Fighter has done the best job to date in my view with SFVI thanks to the Modern control system, lightening the burden on actually executing the moves and instead allowing players to get into the meat of the battles, focusing on spacing and defence.
SFVI's launch was everything SFV's wasn't, and I salute it for doing that.” (Blimey - Ed)
- Third Place:
Cocoon - 8 points (2 votes, 1 first place)(Roll with it for now, we'll talk about this later.) You said: "A bit short, but the puzzles were both clever and just the right side of daunting. Fuck knows what was going on, but who cares."
“The best indie game of the year (shh Andy, I've not played BGIII)” (Andy didn't vote so he doesn't get a say - Ed)
- Second Place:
Final Fantasy XVI - 13 points (3 votes, 1 first place)You said: "One of most stupid things I've ever played but in the best possible way. There's so much ridiculous bullshit in here that's always entertaining, from the over top set pieces to the huge visual spectacles and great voice acting. The story tails off towards the end but it still managed to keep me interested."
"On paper, a Final Fantasy game written by the minds behind FFXIV's best expansions, scored by the FFXIV maestro Soken and in the style of Devil May Cry in regards to its combat sounds like the perfect game for me. And, well... it pretty much was! I was really gripped by the story thanks to the amazing performances from the main cast and even if it got a bit wild towards the end, it wouldn't really be a Final Fantasy game without an ending where you fight God or some shit.
The combat was a great treat - it felt like an evolution of what they tried to do in FFXV albeit with a little bit of spectacle action flourish. I've seen how crazy the combat can go, but even on a surface level (which is probably the level I engaged it at, to be fair) it still shone. Yeah, this was really special and well worth your time."
“Clive!”
- And your Nontendo Game of 2023 is...:
Spider-Man 2 - 13 points (3 votes, 2 first places)You said: "A perfect example of a video game that just achieves everything it sets out to do. The gameplay is satisfying and flows perfectly whether you're taking down bad guys or swinging around New York and the story is really enjoyable with great characters."
"Just a good time swinging about New York as some Spider Dudes and punching up baddies. It might not have been as special as other games I've played this year - it probably isn't even as special as the first game in the series, to be honest - but it was a grand old time and I had fun. And if it's not fun, why bother?"
“Does whatever a spider can Spins a web, any size Catches thieves just like flies Look out Here comes the Spider-Man”
- The best of the rest and my thoughts:
Jusant - 4 points (2 votes) "I wasn't really expecting much from this Don't Nod game especially after Harmony (worst game of the year) yet was an excellent add to Game Pass." "Nice enough explore-y game - to be perfectly honest I am fine with not having to stop exploring to kill things; but possibly a bit empty, and it stops at "and then this happened the end bye save the planet it's a metaphor". Works OK though. And I ain't played owt else that came out this year."
The rest got one vote each.
Baldur's Gate 3 - 4 points - "Disclaimer: I've not personally pressed a button myself playing this game. But I have been a spectator with others playing it, and it's a miraculous example of storytelling. What a year to have this and Zelda. (also I've only actually touched one Nontendo game, and it's not worthy of a 1st place)" (yeah okay I'm getting to that - Ed.) Humanity - 3 points - "A fun puzzle game that never crosses in to too difficult territory, despite its minimal art style its also quite impressive to look at when you have waves of people marching along at once." Resident Evil 4 Remake - 3 points - "Honestly didn't think they'd be able to make this as good as the original but they did a phenomenal job. Putting a parry mechanic in there was genius too." Star Wars: Jedi Survivor - 2 points - "I mentioned another game in my top 5 Nontendo games not feeling as special as the first in the series, and Jedi Survivor is in the same boat. It's still good fun swinging about a lightsabre and using the Force and everything that comes with it, but a shift from smaller levels to a sprawling open world ultimately hurt the game a wee bit, I'd say. I must admit though that I found the story in Jedi Survivor to be more gripping than the original and I'm interested to see how Cal's story arc will conclude in an inevitable third game in the series." Legend of Dragoon - 1 point - "Bugger it, if Switch Online counts, then a PS5 rerelease of a PS1 RPG counts too. Look, this was dated on many fronts - too many random battles, sometimes incomprehensible to know where to go without a guide - but a PS1 JRPG scratches a particular itch that modern JRPGs don't. I think it's the prerendered backgrounds and the chunky character models hopping about on top of the backgrounds. I liked the combat in this too - it's like a slightly trickier version of a timed button press system where each special combo has a certain rhythm you have to hit in order to complete the combo. Pulling off some of the more advanced combos was very satisfying and was usually accompanied by a big cinematic finish. A good time, this one." Quake 2 Remastered - 1 point
My thoughts: Okay, let's talk Cocoon. I know what I said beforehand, and in the end two voters voted for Cocoon on Switch - but the key in my post was 'if it got a (good) Switch version this year it goes in the Nintendo vote'. And Cocoon struggled on Switch, it really did. Noticeably juddery and lacking the visual impact that such a vibes-focussed game needs. Plus, one voter originally had it as Nontendo and the other was the Baldur's Gate 3 fellow. So I made a decision to put it back into bloke one's votes in its original position, and put it up top for bloke two. I look forward to talk about this derailing the thread for days now.
That aside there's a healthy selection of games on other formats that I envied last year, and y'all voted for them! We have yet another winner by the narrowest of margins, with standard yet polished just beating out sprawling and flawed, and then some great variety down the podium. Tip of the hat to the fellow who tried to make up for all the missing voters on his own with that SFVI essay - now that's enthusiasm!
The two games I'm surprised to see coming so low are BG3 (a game I love the existence of without ever wanting to play it) and Resi 4 Remake. But in a year with this many bangers, there just isn't room for everything. Great selection!

I don't know about anyone else but RE4 remake got bumped down on my list simply because it was a remake & not entirely new. It's still a belter of a game though and the Ada Wong dlc rounded off some of the story stuff very well. |

| I'm happy for Cocoon to be here, if it means a Nintendo exclusive makes it now in the Nintendo one.
And now know why Starfield moved to honourables, though my here's the big Xbox game finally, seems a tad see with all the news about Xbox at the moment.

| Considering I'd played a fair few hours on my PlayStation this year I only had 4 games that were eligible as Nontendo (3 I voted for because one was meh). Big hitter like Baldur's Gate, Resident Evil 4 and Jedi Survivor are all there waiting for me to play and I'll no doubt love each one of them, I just didn't get around to them. |

| Honourable Mentions - Other (5 contributors)I don't think it's much of a secret that I prefer these to the games ones. What bits of gaming esoterica did y'all single out for acclaim? - Forum and forum-adjacent:
Masofdas - “If we were still running Contributor he’d be a shoo-in. As is, he’ll be a shoo-in for this category from me for years to come. Basically keeps this place running.”
The Top Games Ranking Thread - “Not a new thread by a long shot, but this got some top content this year! Started by Mas posting his absurd list of a hundred top games. Absurd but much welcomed.” Just Random Popular Games - “On a forum that feels skewed against the genre at times, it’s nice to have a place to chat JRPGs with a bunch of like-minded souls.” 3 Best Blockchain Games to Invest in 2023 - “Get rekt Amelia.” Moments in Gaming That Brought You Genuine Joy - “The best idea for a thread this year, the fact that it died on its backside after ten posts is an indictment of anyone who didn’t post in it. Apparently some people just hate gaming joy.” (Happily it's got a few more than that now! - Ed.)
Hyrule Field Report - "I thought I'd find it a bit dry, but now, a few months after I finished my own journey, it's got a completely different energy from GGS, a relaxing recollection of people and places fondly remembered." Save Slot 3 - "...helped this year by taking my mind of the next stuff, and just by talking games or do a silly quiz with people."
- Gaming Aspects:
Piranha Plants on Parade - “This year’s top gaming moment.”
Addison - ““How's the President standing!?” Just a delight.”
That one song bit in Alan Wake 2 - "I've not played the game, but that one musical section of AW2 looks bonkers and sounds great."
Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores - "is a DLC thing I played this year. S'alright. More of the same. The trouble is that could be said of the base game. I already get confused with what in Burning Shores was DLC for Forbidden West, as opposed to Forbidden West being a sequel to Zero Dawn."
Remakes and Remasters - “I don’t like the schedule being flooded with them, but I can’t deny that between Metroid, Mario RPG, and Ghost Trick this was a belter of a year on that front. Resi 4 elsewhere too.”
Ben Starr - "The voice actor for FF16's Clive Rosfield not only did a belting job on the game but everywhere he pops up whether it's on social media, award shows or the PlayStation Access Christmas Maze he seems like such a likeable and funny guy who gets gamers."
- The Bigger Picture:
The Back Page Podcast - “It’s nice to have somebody from old NGamer doing a good gaming podcast. Also Samuel is there.”
Larian - "For being, by all accounts, a great development studio. I'll get to you eventually, Baldur's Gate 3."
Bobby Kotick Leaving Activision - “Okay he got his golden shower parachute, but at least the cunt’s out of gaming now.”
2023 - “Amidst all the remasters and stuff, a good year for Nintendo games and games in general.”
- And - incredibly - a winner of sorts!:
"The lads never miss with this podcast and if you don't listen you're doing yourself a disservice. Its funny and enjoyable to play along with and even has some twists and turns along the way."
"I'm not on that often, but ... helped this year by taking my mind of the next stuff, and just by talking games or do a silly quiz with people."
"I think it's going from strength to strength."
- My thoughts:
Chuffed to read these! I really do think that we got more comments here than we would have with just the one "Honourable Mentions" category, with so many good things referenced. As for the winner, I must admit it's not something I've tried out, mostly because of its (presumed ) multiformat nature. I'll have to remedy that! Any suggestions for a best episode for a Nintendo-head to give a listen to? Dishonourable Mentions (6 contributors)No Cappa perhaps, but all but one of you/us voters lined up to give some 2023 aspects a good old shoeing. - Games and game-specific bits:
Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories - “The worst game I finished in 2023, a visual novel masquerading as an RPG where both the visuals and the novel are bad. Try-hard quirky that was just bitter, not sweet.” Cocoon - “An “atmospheric experience” pretending to be a puzzler, the actual gameplay was chuffing dull. My “I don’t understand how people can like this” of 2023.”
Agnea from Octopath 2 - “Absolutely stunk out the joint. Terrible character with a terrible plot.”
Powerwash Simulator not fixing their Platinum Trophy - "I finished the story. Where's my trophy? Where is it? " ( - Ed.)
- The Bigger Picture:
AI - "Fuck this shit! Seriously depressing seeing this wheeled out so often in a creative art form, its not even good, that's what makes it even worse that genuinely talented people are losing work because of it."
Nerf Culture - "This might just be me seeing as I play a fair amount of Online pvp games compared to everyone else on here but the general "nerf culture" bugs the hell out of me, new games can't go a week without folk complaining about something & the immediate answer is always "nerf this" thing I don't like rather trying to find a way as a player to counteract it. At it's very worst it can stop devs making the game they actually want to make."
Hiding Endings Behind Collectables - ““If I had a nickel” etc. etc. Both A Space for the Unbound and Sea of Stars hid their best endings behind pick-ups this year. In the former they were missable with no clues as to how many you’d missed; in the latter they were scattered everywhere across a giant world. In both cases they were stupid stupid bad bad ideas that belong in the bin.”
GNamer 2023 Post Count - “Why the death rattle? Are we all just waiting for the next console? Twitter’s shit now, don’t tell me you’re all still posting there instead.”
- And - even more incredibly - a grand loser!:
2023
No picture here, I'll let the man speak for himself:
"I've not talked about this on the forum before this and very few people know, but 2023 has been awful. It all started in January after I found a flat, went to sort out a mortgage which I was refused due to undeclared finances. After this shock as I've never taken a loan or anything, what could this be and talking to the mortgage advisor we looked at my credit report from three different places.
Which I found £35k worth of loans in my name, that I lived at a different addresses etc two out of the three loans taken out in my name were sorted quite quickly, and have to say both super helpful those companies. Yet one dragged on to July of this year, and I had to contact the likes of the FCA, Solicitors as it went around in circles.
As you can guess didn't buy the flat as I couldn't get a mortgage at the time, and now interest rates are super high so that's great. Yet 2023 continues, as you may remember my Dad is ill which we have been London twice this year, where they couldn't find anything wrong with him, so we're back to square one with that.
It doesn't stop, my job no longer exists, been a restructure and we are in a trial period though been told different things about afterwards like my contract is a section leader so that's what I am. Have to see what happens really, and this of course affects a lot of people and if rolled out over the company.
Ohh also my car was quoted to need a new gearbox which been £1500-2500, so I changed my car, which I was looking to do anyway but may have come sooner than I'd like. Yet were some positives of the new car (which also already been back to the garage twice due to sensors, that's not great either) and I found more fraud in my name as when I was sorting out car insurance, my driving licence was for one of the addresses used to take out loans in my name.
If I haven't changed car and started looking around for the best deal on car insurance, I'd like just autorenewed mine and been none the wiser about my driving licence, thankfully the DVLA only took a few weeks to sort and I have a new licence. I will also say the DVLA were the only ones mentioned getting the police involved, while the likes of Action Fraud, they were like well each loan under £30k so the companies will just close the accounts, which they did do in the end. Like, I'd like to know how they did it as it would seem from my driving licence and using that as ID, yet that's on my person, where if I lost it or something I could get how they got the info. And I've checked out the other things Action Fraud mentioned, and those were all fine, have taken CIFAs, NOCs now and done all I can to be secure (I hope).
Yeah! Pretty crappy 2023 fraud, broken car, unsure on job, dad ill, loads of dental work needed and no flat. And my one advice as till all this I didn't check my credit scores as didn't see a reason to, maybe is worth doing for you guys as well.
Let's hope 2024 is better"
Oh and also: "Basically the rest of everything else the rest of the year, that wasn't excellent video games."
- My thoughts:
A healthy selection of baw-bootings, although sadly lacking on entire games getting a kicking. Maybe that's the flip side of the coin, to use a phrase I've used about these already: Honourable Mentions being split out might have confused some people into thinking those weren't allowed. They are, and they're encouraged!
Of course I can't finish up my comments for here without a mention to the bloke who had such a horrid 2023 (it's Mas, I don't think he'll mind me telling you this). A truly dire year on a personal level for you, not to mention the bigger picture. I can only reiterate your hope that 2024 is better for you. (In before Trump gets elected.)

| I won't give you a recommendation Balla, just listen to them all, it's not really about the quiz anyway and to my recollection there's not many episodes that are nontendo centric. Hope 2024 turns out better for you Mas, I've heard bits of that from yourself before now but didn't realise how much had happened, I assume they never noticed the credit fraud because they looked at all your weekly game purchases. I hope that the forum and all its extensions can continue to provide some respite for whatever happens elsewhere, I know its helped me through some harder times. |

| Thanks guys
From what info I've got Smurf, some how they changed my address on my driving licence, then used that as ID to take out accounts etc in my name that of course I knew nothing about as all the stuff would have gone to those addresses.
This year not been the best start with my teeth though that feels a continuous from last year, just now need root canal & a new tooth which is rather spenny. | I can commiserate with you on the root canal at least. Luckily for me, dental care is the one place where the Japanese health insurance system is much better than the NHS. |

| Yeah due to no NHS dentist now here, I'm private why so spenny.
And it's a big issue like been on BBC Radio Somerset that been people outside a new NHS Dentist for two days trying to sign up and Police having to separate people. |

| The Kirby's Epic Yarn Award for Topic of the Year (6 voters, 17 votes)Thread, geddit? No? Okay. A smidge more popular than the postal vote, which were your favourite discussion centres of 2023? - Third Place:
= Last Retro Game You Finished And Your Thoughts - 4 points (2 votes, 0 first places)You said: “As much as I do enjoy reading everyone's thoughts on the latest hits, there's something right about seeing our takes on an old SEGA game or a forgotten title from the Wii's yesteryear. Always a treat.”= The 11th Annual GNamer Forum Secret Santa~! - 4 points (2 votes, 0 first places)You said: "Forever one of my favorite parts of the forum, Christmas is great anyway but getting to share it with you folk is great, I always enjoy seeing present hauls as well, proper serotonin kick."
“Always loved these, and with my Christmas more and more fragmented, this is the bit that makes the day itself feel special.”
- Second Place:
Moments In Gaming That Brought You Genuine Joy - 4 points (2 votes, 1 first place)You said: “It hasn't been the busiest of threads but its recent resurgence has reminded me of it and I'd always much rather celebrate the good than the bad.”
"A beacon of positivity in a shit-arse world - there are very few situations where we just get to share each-others' happiness"
- And your Topic of 2023 is...:
Old Game Shops In Your Hometown - 8 points (4 votes, 2 first places)You said: "A fantastic thread full of great anecdotes. Loved reading through each of the stories as my games shop experience was a bit GAME and Electronics Boutique heavy."
“Interesting stories, albeit sort-of sad ones. Are we the first generation justified in saying the good old days were good? Probably not.”
"A really pleasing little nostalgia sharing session."
- The best of the rest and my thoughts:
One vote each for the rest.
Mas' monthly topics en Mas-se - 3 points - "Technically several topics but they're always a good conversation starter and often introduce me to the fact that some games are releasing I had no idea about." The GNamer Forum Awards 2022 - 3 points - “I like votes, I like awards, I liked Jay expanding the number of categories to celebrate ten years of this place. Shame about him pushing bullshit Final Fantasy stuff over the line. I see you Moyles.” Whichever Last Game You Finished thread is currently active - 3 points
A Third Thread in Which To Share Gaming Music - 2 points - “I like music threads in which people post music. By “people” I mostly mean Balla Mas and Cappa (Buska's surge was last year), which is still better than nothing.” Your Actual Top 3/5/10/20/50 Most Wanted Remakes/Remasters - 2 - "A good subject for discussion I think; not just because we like playing old games, but also how to update the concept of a specific game without making it too far removed from the original"
The Anime/Manga/Related Merchandise Thread - 1 point - "Look, I like posting in here and bothering you all about everything I'm watching once a season, even if nobody else does. " Last Game You Didn’t Finish And Your Thoughts - 1 point - “I got a lot of mileage out of this thread this year unfortunately. None of us are screaming Twitter users with anime avatars and bile in their souls, so even negative comments are broadly interesting to read without being soul-destroying.”
My thoughts: He's done it again! That's a clean podium sweep for Cappa. The award may not exist any more, but does it need to? We all know he'd have dunked on contributor as well.
Nobody else voted for any of my choices, but I did give that honourable to Gaming Joy, so it's nice to see it getting a place. The runaway winner is truly bittersweet for me, albeit not in the same way as those who properly contributed to it - I grew up in the soulless hole of retail that is North London, I have nothing of any interest to share here and can't relate to the nostalgia expressed. I wish so much that I could.
Final thought: imagine an Athrun thread getting a vote in the Year of Our Lord 2023.

| The end is nigh! Huge thanks to everybody who took part for taking part, I still thought it was a lot of fun and I hope you did too. The Grackler Award for Best Nintendo Game (7 voters, 34 votes) (missing one due to the Coocon switcheroo) These days, this is why we're really here. Have at it. Oh, and I will drop comments in each case here, there's enough going on. - Fifth Place:
= F-Zero 99 - 6 points (3 votes, 0 first places)You said: "I missed the initial hype wave of this releasing and I didn't think I'd ever get around to playing it. Months later, surely it would be full of sweats and tryhards and I'd have negative fun as a result, no? Whilst the tippity top players in most races definitely fall into that bracket, I actually ended up having a great time and even picked up a couple of 1st place finishes. It's easily my favourite 99 game that's dropped thus far - the controls are tight and responsive and the Skyway system means that there's always a chance to catch up even if you're lagging behind. The SNES art style is clean and looks lovely on Switch. Sadly the nature of this being online only means that'll eventually die a sad death, but I'd recommend checking this out sooner than later if you haven't already."
"Some further updates might do this some good; as the Battle-Royale aspect only really affects the bigger Grand Prix mode, ditch that and have multiple teams, as opposed to the 2 teams of 49/50 you can't have any control over. But what a great example of fixing a hole in the original game (i.e. no multiplayer). Pilotwings 99 next, please."= Pikmin 4 - 6 points (2 votes, 0 first places)You said: "I can't really disagree with some criticism, in that there's a bit lost in the survival and tension, compared to the previous games. But it's been interesting to see that the Pikmin-verse is fleshed out a bit, and of course it works if you treat it as a hoovering-up exercise."
"There aren't many game series that can pull off the wonderous exploration vibes like Pikmin can. For me the more relaxed nature of the game with it's various QoL changes and challenge modes later on made for a perfect balance when I wanted something that would either engage or relax me."
I said: We start with two games I haven't touched but that I'm glad exist. I'm very happy that Pikmin fans got their next game finally, even if it wasn't exactly what all of them wanted from the series - and given the much discussed lack of challenge for the most part, there's a non-zero chance I might pick this up some day. I won't pick F-Zero 99 up, battle royales aren't for me - but it's just nice to see Nintendo doing something, anything, with the series again.
- Fourth Place:
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective Remastered - 6 points (2 votes, 1 first place)(You got fourth place Lynn, that's what!) You said: "Is this the best Switch game of 2023? No. But, is this the best game on Switch of 2023? No. But, is this the best Switch remaster of 2023? No, that’s Metroid Prime. This is, quite simply, the very best niche game of all time surprisingly seeing the light of day again, with long enough since the original release for it to be worth re-purchasing, and holding up an absolute treat. Whether you’re actually interested in playing it or just in funding Shu Takumi’s next non-AA venture, everybody here should have this."
I said: That bit above. That's me. This was my first place. I'm so so glad this exists. (Also: breaks the Nintendo stranglehold on the top five.)
- Third Place:
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Future Redeemed - 9 points (2 votes, 1 first place)You said: “Shame this didn't get a standalone like Torna.”
"The best DLC in a year that was strong on that front. More of last year’s best game, what’s not to love? It’s full of beans!"
I said: I know what some of you are going to say. To you, then: look at that average point score. 4.5. If you played this you loved it, simple as that. Moving on.
- Second Place:
Super Mario Wonder - 21 points (6 votes, 0 first places)You said: "I can't add a lot here as I've only really just started playing it, but it's a relief to see that Nintendo can still add imagination to a 2D Mario game (Mario Maker may have otherwise implied an evolutionary dead-end)."
"I just couldn't put it down for anything else until I had seen absolutely everything. Wonderful *ahem* stuff. "
"Admittedly didn't have the staying power for me it should have but full of great moments, perfect platforming gameplay and never failed to make me smile."
"Slightly overhyped and surrounded by discourse I didn't agree with. In a vacuum, maybe it places higher?"
"I've always been more of a 3D Mario guy over 2D - I still am, to be honest - as I found that 2D Mario in recent years has been a bit formulaic. Here's your auto-scroller airship level. Here's your icy slippery floor level. A desert level with Pokeys galore? Of course. I think Wonder managed to distinguish itself from recent 2D Marios by having something exciting and, yes, wonderful in each level. Suddenly that airship level becomes a tense exercise in dodging as a big Bowser laser does its best to murder you. Your usual grassland opening level becomes a musically charged bop as Piranha Plants march and dance to the beat.
I could wax lyrical about how this is quite easily my favourite 2D Mario game but my key takeaway from this is that the future of Mario is in very safe hands."
"La la la la DA DA-DA DA DA! Na na, la-da da, la da-da da da dan!"
I said: Interesting one, this. While I don't think a second place was ever in doubt, there's a little bit of damning with faint praise going on, and it was nobody's first place. The aforementioned discourse is presumably the slagging off of the NSMB sub-series in the aftermath. It's a point of view I struggle with personally: after four games of more or less the same thing, this was absolutely the shot in the arm 2D Mario needed for me even if it wasn't the best-paced game in the world, and I do think four games of more or less the same thing are inevitably going to look worse in the afterglow despite their solidity.
Anyway, in the end it came a deserved second. In a vacuum or in context, this was a great time.
- And your Nintendo Game of 2023 is (try to contain your surprise)...:
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - 25 points (5 votes, 5 first places)You said: "Boundless creativity in the best open world ever created. I honestly can't think of another game in this genre that managed to hold my attention for over 200 hours and constantly surprised me as I travelled across Hyrule. I've never been one for creativity in games - I've bounced off the likes of Minecraft before in a big way - but this was the first game where I found my brain racing at the possibilities of the Ultrahand and Fuse systems.
Much like after finishing BotW, I have no idea where Zelda will be heading next but I am beyond excited for it."
"No game has made me feel like I was on a proper adventure until this, an absolute joy from start to finish."
"Honestly, anyone voting for anything other than this needs to have a word with themselves. Is it perfect? No, of course not. Is it as good as BotW? Arguably, no. But being the second best game of all time is still pretty bloody special, and the fact that this delivered against all the odds is bonkers."
"Is it better than Breath of the Wild? Yes which makes this the new best game ever. Did everything the previous game did and innovated in unimaginable ways, the story was great, had some amazing set pieces and just a joy to play from start to finish."
"They did it. They bloody did it. They took the best game, and made a sequel to it that was better and had more stuff in it and was better. It didn't even feel like the sequel was retreading that much ground either. I know I said this with Breath of the Wild, but I cannot imagine where to go from here."
I said: Looks like I'm having a word with myself.
Look. Objectively this is obviously my top game of this year. Anything close to a competitor was a remake, a remaster, or DLC. I didn't vote for it for two reasons: I knew every other bugger not named Mas and Andy was going to vote for it and it was going to place top without my input; and as the year went on, I just... cooled on it a bit. I'm not going to go into why here, because this is about positivity, but over the course of the year it fell from being my second game of all time to its current standing at 17th.
That's sixty places higher than any other new game this year. This is an absolutely amazing game. You don't need me to tell you that but I will anyway. The ending in particular is one of my top five gaming moments of all time easily. It completely deserves first place.
- The best of the rest and my thoughts:
No first places in here. The next three games got two votes each.
WarioWare: Move It! - 5 points "The best multiplayer fun ever produced." "Would probably have placed higher if I'd played more or with others but this is WarioWare back to it's best."
Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon - 3 Points "Whimsy." "This bumps Metroid Prime from my top five because while that game starts well but left a bitter taste in my mouth, this one starts slow but builds to a better climax. Something something that's what she said."
A Space for the Unbound - 2 points "Top-notch indie which I think has now gone under the radar." "I’ve got to give a point to this, as the only game to make me cry sober in years. Lovely point-and-click steeped in Indonesian culture that makes one of my least favourite storytelling tropes work."
The rest got one vote each.
4 points Pikmin 1 & 2 - "Pikmin remains one of the best games of all time, doubly confirmed this year by Pikmin 4 coming out and sanding off everything that made Pikmin interesrting until there's barely a game left." Star Ocean Second Story R - "Top-notch 2D-HD remake from Square."
3 points Fire Emblem Engage - "Nowhere near as good as Three Houses still a great FE game mind." Metroid Prime Remastered - "Yep, still one of the greatest Nintendo games of all time. Now with added gyro controls. " Sea of Stars - "I remember this being on my radar from a very early .gif of a giant stone giant lobbing a massive orb across an ocean impressed me when it popped up on Twitter years back. The pixel art in this game is genuinely stunning and deserves recognition. The game itself is a grand time, of course. The ideas it uses in its combat system aren't particularly original, but blending Paper Mario timed button presses with a Bravely Default style overcharge system works really well. In a year where the biggest RPG releases either veered into the realms of DND or arguably out of the RPG genre itself, it was actually refreshing to have a game that's unashamedly proud of being an homage to 90s JRPGs."
2 points Cassette Beasts - "Doesn’t “show Pokémon how it’s done” so much as do something adjacent but different to Pokémon and carry it off, after the post-launch patch at least, with aplomb. Same Old Story still gets played on the regular."
1 point Fire Emblem (Switch Online) - "I played Engage and whilst it certainly gave a good strategic showing, the characters absolutely did my head in. A big chunk of the appeal of Fire Emblem is growing attached to these characters as they barrel across each battlefield and grow from fledgling troops into war machines. Thankfully, I got a good dose of strategy alongside some great characters when Switch Online dropped the first Western FE game on our laps this year. It might seem basic compared to later entries - no skills, a reduced support system, no hub area to visit between battles - but I think it's much more focused as a result. You don't have to faff about speaking to NPCs or doing general busywork like at the Monastery in Three Houses or the Somniel in Engage. A bit of inventory management is all it takes and then you're into the next fight. Roll on Sacred Stones on Switch Online!" Sonic Superstars - "A good game from Arzest! A really great effort for 2D Sonic, it has all the fun flashy moments but also a nice amount of challenge to it, 4-player gimmick is surprisingly fun."
My thoughts: It's the three-point mark that interests me the most - three games, all acclaimed in their various segments of the market, that only got a vote each here (although MP1R was close to picking up a second, and missed out for me due to being a remaster of something that needs less pumping up than Ghost Trick). Otherwise, what I've played of WarioWare suggests that it just missing out on a place is fair, what I've played of Bayorigins doesn't suggest the same but it sounds like it really ramps up near the end, and I voted for ASftU so obviously I'm here for that. Cassette Beasts was my final vote: it felt underplayed here in general, for a forum that gets on with Pokémon. Well worth a try if you haven't!

This isn't anywhere near your standard BR tbh, plus there's various modes including classic which is your standard 20 racers format. (Though this does rotate out alongside other events) - Quote :

Twitter is indeed a shit heap, most of my free time is spent playing games rather than posting about them. Wasn't sure what to write about post counts. We might be shooting ourselves in the foot - but then also this is where my opinion perhaps differs from everyone. Twitter is crap, and I basically don't open it now, except to read the Fantasy Game Manager Club post things from you guys. Then the occasional chat appears on Dicord. And then there's here - which I may log onto my PC once a week to check; the website just doesn't work on mobile, and that specific app looks like malware. We probably need to optimise this. The answer of course is Skype - The_Jaster wrote:

| Yeah F-Zero 99 is huge fun and I say this as someone who's traditionally quite bad at the game, I've never been at the tail-end of the pack in 99 but from what I've seen I don't think many people ever get eliminated anyway. I also see they've added private lobbies now, not sure how many people it's for but there's a potential multiplayer session to be had there. No real surprises with the votes but then really why should there be, Nintendo are just masters of the craft and Tears of the Kingdom is one of their many masterpieces. Of all the games listed Cassette Beasts is very much the one I've yet to play that I really should, I think it released at the wrong time and I just forgot about it then, now that I've been reminded though I'll be looking to pick it up soon. With that being the last award I think it appropriate to thank Balla for this year's awards, it might not have had the expected turnout which as someone who's been too exhausted to do most things lately I can understand but he's made it work and it's been an enjoyable read. |

| I’m sorry that I didn’t get involved for this 2024 vote. A combination of things in-and-out of work meant that I just didn’t have or make time to look into 2023’s best posts or threads, or take the time to think about the games I liked the most and least. January was a stressful month and the thought of spending even a nanosecond in front of a computer screen for any longer than I needed to be was very demotivating. I sadly lacked the energy for this years awards. Thanks for the kind comments that were made about the posts and topics I’ve made though, they’re much appreciated. Within my gaming community GNamer is basically where I live; I’ve got nowhere else I’d want to go, or post, or contribute. So, thank you for hosting and humouring my utter bollocks. |

| Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't get involved with this. I haven't been as active in 2023, mainly because work has ramped up and eaten into many evenings, and I spend two nights a week with my missus. And I write music reviews each week too, so life's just got in the way. I pop on Discord to view the Back Page's channel most days, so I think that has also given me my gaming/magazine fix that I used to get from here, but definitely look forward to visiting the forum to read posts. It is more rewarding, and conversations quickly get lost in Discord. I'd rather log on to a handful of thoughtfully written posts, then a 100+ messages from people with questionable taste. - masofdas wrote:
