| Does look a bit Mexican in style, doesn't it? Title changed. |

| My reaction was in line with Balla's, I'm sure it'll be a good game, but it looks like more of the same in the Galaxy/3D Land/3D World style of game. After a decade of that style of 3D Mario it's time to move on in my eyes, rather than iterate.
Even if the worlds were more open it'd need a physics system and controls as characteristic as 64 and Sunshine. Even competently moving around in those games required mastery of the controls, whereas judging from the short footage in the Switch trailer, this Mario title will make that a lot more accessible.
So I'm guessing it'll be like Galaxy/3D World in that you only really need to be skilled to pull off insane shortcuts and tackle harder stages.
I seem to remember Nintendo stating they would use the Zelda physics engine in other games, hopefully that applies to Mario. If the actual traversal and platforming are in the style of Galaxy/3D World, then hopefully the objects Mario interacts with will provide an extra layer of depth through more interactive physics. |

| To be fair I don't think you can lump in the Galaxy "style" with the 3D Expanse one. I wasn't the greatest fan of the Galaxy games, but I will say they have a lot more imagination, spectacle, and general fun than the 2.5D playstyle.
I'd love Super Mexico 64/Sol, but at this stage I'll take Galaxthree. |

| Woah WOAH WOAH WOAH!
I'm actually quite a fan of 3Ds Land and World, but Super Mario Galaxy is a whole cut above. The design and imagination in the levels was a seminal showcase of imagination and meticulous gameplay perfection. Mario's control was sublime, responsive and snappy but with depth like a whole planet's volcanic superstructure. Super Mario Galaxy is unto games as a god to the human being. |

| Hey now, I actually really loved both Galaxy games and think they are both masterful pieces of design right down to the little extra mechanics like the star bits.
Likewise, I think 3D Land is a superb game, though 3D World less so. (3D Land felt like it knew what it wanted to be, whereas 3D World felt less focused and more like a quasi-Galaxy).
It's just that I'd like Nintendo to move on from this style of 3D Mario game, or at least why can't we have both? Anyway I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and wait until we see more than 8 seconds of footage. Hopefully the next evolution of 2D Mario will be even more exciting. |

| 2D Mario feels like it hasn't evolved since NSMB1. Since then, it's been outstripped on the fun front by DK and Kirby and Yoshi. I hope, somewhat against hope, that the Switch 2D Mario will be slightly more interesting. - Drunkalilly wrote:

I completely agree: praised unduly, not as perfect as everyone thinks it is, and a whole lot of style over substance. |

| That's me trying to be funny, that is. Obviously SMG is a grand game that is better than God, and I can easily see what everyone else sees in it. I just felt short-changed by its EXTREME linearity, having grown up with SM64 rather than the 2D games. |

If Nintendo doesn't want to move 2D Mario in an exciting new direction, then can we at least have a new non-Mario platformer developed in-house by them? The last time it happened was Wario Land 4! |

| Simple.. go back to a 3D Mario, that's the best way to give the 2d a jump.
But hey despite the fact I keep saying I'm over the 2d games |

| 3D land/world should have been the natural jump since many of it's mechanics are similar to the 2D games. |

| That was the whole thinking behind those games, as I recall, to be the "missing link" between 2D and 3D. |

| Makes sense, though we are now four games into that style of Mario title (including Galaxy 1), whereas "true" 3D Mario only had two series entries...
EAD Tokyo do great work but I'd like to see one of Nintendo's Kyoto-based teams take on 3D Mario again. |

| Galaxy definitely isn't that style though, Galaxy was the most complex movement style Mario's ever had! |

| I presume that Fronky means in the style of "here's a linear level, go from one end to the other" rather than how Mario gets there. |

| That's most videogames, though. I'd argue Galaxy had much more of a mix of exploration and linearity than people seem to remember it for. |

| Perhaps that's fair, I remember about five exploratory stars, and they were one-offs. Buoy Base remains my favourite galaxy not just (okay mainly) because of the music, but also because you had a whole two routes you could take to get stars. TWO ROUTES! |

| Rumour from the historically trustworthy LPVG/Laura Kate Dale: - LPVG wrote:
- The title will apparently feature a 3D open world hub from which different worlds can be selected, with multiple objectives to complete in each, much like Mario 64 or Mario Galaxy. This may seem obvious, but we share this information to specify that this will not be a Super Mario 3D World-style game where the action is in 3D, but each stage is a linear path designed to be completed a single time.
The multiplayer teased in the trailer will be a co-op version of the main game, with both players able to work together toward objectives, but with a form of tether to keep the players from going too far from each other. Player two's gameplay will not hold player one back from progress, but player two can be the one to complete an objective and be shown as receiving the level end reward. A screen will then show how much of the progress toward that success was down to each player, like how many red coins each player collected in a red coin stage. PLEASE BE TRUE PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE |

| SM64 and Galaxy approached that 'repeated use of a level' idea from different angles, though. I reckon it'll be more Galactic in manner than 64-y. They call me Zero, Ruiner of Moments. |

| This links into the Zelda not being a launch game as Emily brought up that Mario would be the main launch game, and now were hearing this. |

| Sounds good. I'd love a Mario game with a bit more of a feeling of adventure and event but for me the big wish is for the the better, more complex Mario control of 64/Sunshine/Galaxy. Hopefully they go hand in hand. |

| Such is my anticipation for this game, I have dug up my copy of Mario 64 DS so I can play some of that, then Sunshineand the Galaxy games, before release. Maybe with 3Ds Land and World if I finish the others.
I've been meaning to replay Mario 64 DS since release of the 3DS! I want to see how it feels with the circle pad. |

| Another Drunka's Music Countdown in the works? I don't have much hope for SM64DS, though: it had problems beyond the controls, sadly. |

| I played it to completion on DS with the d-pad and loved it, so I guess mileage varies on that one.
Plus, I really like playing card games with bow-tied Luigi. Feels very James Bond to me. I distinctly remember playing a spot of poker on my DS after watching Casino Royale in the cinema. |
