| On paper, I should like Rocket League as I like football and cars but it's never clicked with me. I've got a feeling it's because I was playing for review before it came out on PS4 and everyone was rubbish at it and just wasn't fun.
I can totally see why it makes a Top 10 though. |

| Mornin’! Who’s up for another result? The Anime Fan on Prom Night Award for Ninth Place- Okey-Dokey:
Monster Hunter XX(20 points, 3 voters, 0 firsts) ( Monster Hunter XX also wins the Best Monster Hunter Game On Switch For Western Owners Because Capcom Hates You, Yes You, Award.) Trailer: Wait, what's that goat thing on the bed? It's adorable! I want one. Music: I AM A WEEB Video of Choice: Remains my favourite monster, shame about the commentary. Gets good from 2:47. Nintendo Life Review: Er, there isn't one yet. Instead, here's an editorial that... er... tells you not to bother. - You Said:
"I bloody love me some Monster Hunter, me, and the Switch really is the perfect machine for it. Fire it up on the bus or while my family are watching telly, grind out some monsters to make weapons and armour, then plug it into the TV when everyone goes to bed and kill big beasties with my mates. The dream. This could have got 1st or 2nd place, but it is very much an upscale of an expansion of a spin-off of a 3DS game that’s running on more or less the same engine the series has used since 2004. Here’s hoping some of World’s mechanical improvements come to the next Switch title."
"I bloody love Monster Hunter, which is staggering considering that I've only been playing the series for a little over a year and a half by this point. When XX was announced to be heading Switchwards, I was chuffed to pieces and I waited patiently for a Western release announcement. And I waited... and I waited some more... and then, nothing. Fortunately, the Switch's region free functionality saved the day and allowed me to enjoy some MonHan on Switch, but not without a few issues. "For one, the lack of any option for transferring our save data from MHGen to MHXX resulted in having to replay nearly 100 hours worth of content, which was trying to say the least. Couple that with the language barrier causing some problems in getting into the nitty gritty of building an armour set or upgrading weapons and I was struggling to really enjoy myself. But as soon as we hit the new content in MHXX, the fun times rolled on once again. I do wish I'd got to enjoy this in a language I could understand and avoided having to play a lot of the same game again, but it's still brilliant."
"It's Monster Hunter. It's the most Monster Hunter. I love Monster Hunter"
- I Said:
For me, the real story here is that Nintendo has fully embraced region-free. For a while it seemed, perversely, to be going the other way: its home consoles had never really liked it, but they scrapped it on the 3DS too. A reminder that, at times, the company we all love can be frustratingly backward.
Then came the Switch, and, like with so many other things, they only went and aced it. All games region-free, and you can easily access all regions' eShops. A massive improvement. Whether it's worth celebrating or not depends on whether you think Nintendo should have made the move at least a generation ago: regardless, it is a Very Good Thing, and we'll all be able to play (turns on private browsing) Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 3. Hooray!
As for the game itself, three out of four Monster Mash-ers voted in these awards, and it got three votes. Monster Hunter will never be without its fans around these parts, even while said fans have concerns out the wazoo. Apart from fan number three, apparently.
- They Said:
Celebrity Guest Jeremy Hunt"I don't know why I'm here, really. I mean, ha ha, Monster Hunter, but... 'Double Cross'? What's that got to do with me? Anyway, let's have a look... "...oh. You know, I think they're onto something. A return to a simpler way of life. Communing with nature. Hunter-gathering. What are the life expectancies of these hunter chaps? No reason, just curious. "And they forage for herbs, you say, and make potions out of them? Yes, I really think this system could take some pressure off the NHS. Make your own medicine, live off the land! Some hunters may be scorched to death by Valphalks, but at least then they'll be warm in winter, ha ha! What? Oh, the Dom Perignon, I think."

| Rocket League didn't place for me, but that's because I didn't get much opportunity to play with the lads in between real-life concerns like "having a job in a restaurant" and "moving to another country" and "playing 150 hours of Monster Hunter XX".
Now, as for game number nine . . . |

Nah all about Rei-Jin-G-Lu-P. MonHan always going to make the Top 10 and I feel like some of the others that it's a win for region free gaming especially for someone who did buy Double Cross, was given a American version of Binding of Issac and imported Seiken Densetsu Collection it has been great as well as buying most of my eShop games from the USA due to them being cheaper. |

| Andy is a bluff ol' MonHun traditionist, it would seem. The Joy-Sharing Award for Best Multiplayer Game on Switch- Fifth Place:
= ARMS(11 points, 5 voters, 1 first) "Learning to beat the computer is a fire-spitting rage of a thing. Learning to beat a human is much more fun, naturally, and I am thankful for my fellow ARMSageddon partners. We may not have caused the end of the world, but we did have a jolly good time. That was the main thing." "Scuppered somewhat by a shonky online connection, but great fun when it worked." "Surprisingly tense and exhilarating, and the new Party Crash events really add a lot of to value to the whole muiltplayer set-up. I’ve always enjoyed a session on ARMS. We should have played this more." "When it comes down to it, when it’s mano e mano with another player and the back-and-forth is great, your skill levels are super close and its taking everything you’ve got to scrape that win . . . this is what it’s all about. I don’t always get that with ARMS. I have to be in the zone, and it has to be the right opponent. When I get a match like that or, even better, a whole series of rematches, there really is nothing like it." "I needed a 5th game." = Monster Hunter XX(11 points, 3 voters, 1 first) "It's Monster Hunter..." "It's still brilliant fun bashing in some monsters with some mates." "I enjoy Monster Hunter on my own. The phenomenally designed and realised monsters are all the company I need. That said, getting the lads online and getting stuck into a juice multiplayer session elevated the experience to a serious cut above. What a game."
- Fourth Place:
Rocket League(15 points, 5 voters, 0 firsts) "It’s a game that’s all about the multiplayer experience, and happily it plays amazingly on Switch. We should have played this more." "What a Save! Whether It's with a squad playing online or local with a few mates this is always huge fun." "When you pull this off, I imagine it looks beautiful. Zooming through the air, hitting the ball at just the right angle to sending it soaring majestically into the top corner of the next... When I play it, more often I end up looking the wrong way, and nudging the ball in by accident. When nobody’s any good, anyone can win, and that makes it fun." "Madcap and chaotic." "and one time I got to play with all my friends on the forum and I wasn't very good and I scored one goal but actually I got in the way of ross and he pushed me onto the ball and"
- Third Place:
Jackbox Party Pack Three(16 points, 4 voters, 1 first) "With the souls who were there, an absolute laugh riot of epic proportions. I've been to see professional stand-up comedians that have made me laugh less than the legendary round we had in Newcastle last year. A complaint you might level at it is that you have to make your own fun out of it - we managed that in spades." "I won’t have any of that, ‘But it’s your friends who make it funny, not the game.’ It’s Quiplash that brings out your friends’ humour and creativity, which would otherwise lie dormant. It’s not alone in that, but it’s damn good at it. Also there are four other games." (Yes I did put these comments one after another on purpose.)"Purely for the brilliant session from the meetup last year." "Pick any you like, they're all brilliant although Quiplash is king. Very nearly took my top spot for Multiplayer but just missed out due to my number 1's staying power."
- Second Place:
Splatoon 2(20 points, 6 voters, 2 firsts) "I've yet to play the single player and I've not played much online but what I've played is top notch." "Turf War, Splat Zones, Tower Control, Salmon Run – it’s all good stuff. We should have played this more." "Splatoon has exquisite modes for both co-operative and competitive multiplayer, and it can be just as fun to jump in on my own and just have a laugh as to get stuck into league or ranked mode and properly take it seriously. Throw in the genius of Splatfests, and you’ve got something really special." "More of the same with this but they've done well to add in more modes this time such as Salmon Run and the frequency of Splatfests this time around has made me play even more than it predecessor." "Because you can only say things like "boo-yah" to your fellow inklings as opposed to calling their mother a c***. I propose that I am the best at Moray Towers." "My favourite Switch game is also my favourite one to play multiplayer. Salmon run is a great addition and helps break up the monotony of turf war. Ranked is still fun despite Nintendos best efforts to stop people playing with friends! A decent lobby and voice system and this would be my most played game of 2017!"
- WINNAH:
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe(39 points, 9 voters, 4 firsts) "Despite the 120 hours i put into the Wii U version i still play this regularly. Battle mode is now great online!" "Hypothesis: It’s the best Mario Kart. Corollary: It’s the best multiplayer game. Contradiction: It’s in my list at number 2." "There's nothing like screwing somebody over at the finish line with a well placed Green Shell. Magic." "It might be a port but the multiplayer is still top notch." "I've had so much fun both round the TV and online. And with battle mode back, the laffs keep on coming. I kind of want to play it now, typing this in." "It was always gonna ween, made even better than the Wii U version with a respectable battle mode this is the same old Mario Kart madness but rejuvenated thanks to the Switch hardware." "Its Mario Kart, innit? The best one, at that." "I believe we've got to a stage where we can claim that Nintendo are alright at online with this game. They're as masterful with local multiplayer ('couch co-op' just sounds like that scene from Friends where Ross shouts "Pivot" more times than is reasonable) as they have ever been. You know when you first bite into a bar of solid chocolate, like a Dairy Milk or something, and as your teeth close together you have a moment of perfection? MK8D is a bit like that." "Every cunt loves Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. We should have played this more."
- Jostling for position:
Fast RMX(9 points, 4 votes, 0 firsts) "At launch, was a bit muh till it got the update for online which was great till Mario Kart came along." "I had a crazy amount of fun on this, it's really not my type of game but I got pretty competitive and it really was quite special." "This was the multiplayer game of choice for a while. Having everyone on was a laugh, but the real tasty part was the constant battle between myself and Andy, as the two who put the most time in, to see who was top of the points. We had one classic evening of just the two of us, where he was convinced he’d catch up with me, but by the time he went to bed I’d only extended my lead." "So can Shin'en Just be allowed to make F Zero Nintendo?"
- You also voted for:
Sonic Mania (5/1/1) "I’d been wanting the return of Sonic 2’s mega-squished split-screen Player Versus mode for years, and Sonic Mania’s Competition Mode replicates it brilliantly. It’s another outstanding, faultless aspect of one of the decade’s greatest games."
Puyo Puyo Tetris (5/2/0) "Everyone in my family is "a bit good" at Tetris, meaning this is great for family get-togethers. The only downside is I'm the only one who's learned to play the Puyos." "The story mode was great fun and so was the multiplayer when not a lot of Puyo Puyo was involved."
1-2-Switch! (4/2/0) "In that it's a Switch game that I have played with other people. 'Opponents', if you will." "Purely because of the meetup."
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (4/1/0) "I'm rating the mode more than my time with it, but it's a nice idea, just need a friend that cares for strategy (or you can just play it yourself and defeat the point)."
Overcooked! Special Edition (4/3/0) "Minecraft is higher up my secret internal list, but I think for multiplayer fun, you can't go wrong with trying to make meals in Overcooked. I just need to stop my brother-in-law from shouting "service"." "Played this with friends recently and my god what hilarious fun!" "‘Get the plate. The plate. No, the other plate, the other... thank you. Your soup’s almost on fire, your soup’s almost... oh great. Good job. And now the lorries have moved apart, splendid, nice going, well done. What do you mean it’s my fault!? I was chopping onions!’ Co-operative gameplay? Ha. Yeah right."
Snipperclips (4/3/0) "This was sweet, wasn’t it? But at the same time kind of forgettable now. Cutting chunks out of each other to solve puzzles was cute, the shapes were cute, the whole game was cute... but insubstantial." "A nice idea that ultimately never pulled me back after the first session." "Great little title that is so much fun with friends!"
Super Mario Odyssey (1/1/0) "Bear with me on this one, at launch the game had the high score challenges which were fun to compare, that skipping rope one got especially competitive. The bulk of my vote though goes to the new Balloon World mode, it hasn't been available long but I've already put quite a bit of time in to it and I can only see this getting more competitive once people figure out more on where they can be hidden."
- My thoughts:
Ladies and gentlemen, I present unto you the most flipping obvious award of all time! Dah-da-da-daaaaaaah. (blows the limpest of party horns)
But aye, it was always going to be MK8D, wasn't it? Only one out of ten people didn't include this in their votes. And Spla2n right after (although half the points behind), in echoes of that one Wii U vote I ran.
My personal favourite was Jackbox. Not as good a game as MK8, nobody would dispute that - but I reckon it's a better multiplayer game. You can get eight people 'round the telly, piddling themselves, for one thing. I'm especially surprised that we got anybody who came to Newcastle who didn't vote for this. Can only assume they literally piddled themselves and held a grudge. (12S got a couple of points off that meetup too, which is... nice? I suppose?)
The we've got Rocket League, the best football game I've played since ISS98; ARMS, not quite the smash hit Splatoon was last gen. but still with enough fans to place; and MHXX because Monster Mash is a thing and yer boys luuuuuuurve the monsters. Some launch efforts, the odd Mario game, Sega offerings, and the most stressful culinary experience known to man round out the votes.
The Switch is a killer machine for multiplayer, especially local. It'd be that only with Mario Kart, but with everything else, it's magic. Also, what is it with you lot and vagina synonyms?
Phew. Tomorrow: placings eight and seven!

| This might be a silly question but how can a game with 12 points not be 5th but two with less points are, is the system weighted that 1st places / amount of voters are worth more than actual points? |

Not a clue how you arrived at that conclusion. I've played a fair bit of it on PC and it's the same game on Switch. I don't see how you could see RL on Switch as a downgrade, unless you're a massive fan of rain effects in games in which case Breath of the Wild better be your number one. As for the votes! 9th place: Damn straight! It would have been higher if the whole Mash quartet were involved this time round, I'd imagine. Multiplayer vote: I think that was more or less my top five charting there, but it's a testament to the great line-up of multiplayer titles that I was checking out the honourable mentions and was thinking "yeah, that could have placed" for a fair few of them. |

| For those disappointed with this morning's offering (what part of Link toppling down a hill do you not appreciate?): The Harman Smith Award for Seventh Place- Ribbit Ribbit:
= ARMS(22 points, 5 voters, 0 firsts) ( ARMS also wins the Best Game Where You Can Hit People With Dragons On Noodles Award.) Trailer: Yes, this was odd. Japan, what is it with you and schoolgirls? Music: Ribbon Girl sings the main theme. It's brilliant. Video of Choice: A reminder that this fella is actually still a character, and not a recurring nightmare of mine. Nintendo Life Review: Excellent. - You Said:
"I’ve always enjoyed hearing people talk about fighting games. Reading the opponent, being reactive and proactive, the mind games and the strategy of leading one another here and there. It sounds like the purest, ultimate expression of competitive gaming. Unfortunately, I never had the time or the thumbs to learn how to execute all the moves and that. ARMS’ genius is in stripping back all the technical inputs and making a game that’s all about the good bits. The fact that it has a charming and lovable cast, and lots of silly modes for when you just want a lark, is icing on the cake."
"What I expected to be quite throwaway and a bit of a waggle-fest is actually one of the Switch’s smartest games. It’s much bolder, deeper and entertaining than that original Nintendo Direct trailer made it out to be, and it uses the JoyCons brilliantly. This deserved Splatoon 2’s success."
"I do wish I'd enjoyed this more than I had. I love me some fighting games and ARMS presented a very unique take on the genre with a bigger focus on spacing and movement over combos and technical execution. I've enjoyed some brilliantly tense battles with folks of all skill levels due to the simplicity of the game's design. A somewhat shonky online system scuppered this game a bit for me, sadly."
"Oh ARMS. When this came out i was super excited for a Nintendo take on an EVO fighting game.... which is what this is... but it just lacked a real reason to play in the beginning. Playing this game now shows me what it could have been if only it had more content at launch. its a great game but hopefully ARMS 2 has a few extra modes to keep players invested."
"A one-on-one fighter that plays like no other out there. It's all about positioning and drawing your opponent into moving... or moving at the right time yourself. As clever as it is accessible, ARMS is further proof that a), Nintendo can walk into any genre and make a fab little game, and b), new Nintendo is where it's at."
- I Said:
Bit of a mixed bag there in the comments, and that's reflected in the way ARMS got into the Top Ten: five votes, all between 3 and 6 points. People enjoyed Nintendo's big new idea, but it wasn't without its foibles.
That said, ARMS remains another one in the eye (delivered from across the room) for those who'd protest that Nintendo gets by on old franchises alone. Having tried out the online shooter with the Wii U, it went with the Tekken-alike fighter on the Switch, and definitely delivered to an extent. All the while showing developers who would sell 'games as services' exactly how that should be done: with a wealth of free updates.
I never played it, I must admit: seemed a bit sparse at launch, and I'm not really a traditional fighter type. But I'm glad it placed. Developers should be rewarded for trying new things, as well as building on established formulae.

Celebrity Guest Jerome "Doc" LouisI promise the next one will not be a 'Jer-' of any sort."Okay, Mac, listen up. These guys may have the range advantage over you, but you got the speed advantage over them. And they’re only springs: it's not like that last fight you had, with all those big-eyed sword girls. Now that was more unfair than Aran Ryan's title defence bout. "That sucka with the blue hair, when his health gets low you gotta watch out, Mac: he'll floor you! The pop idol floats like a mosquito son, bring her down to earth. Then there's the... uh... is that a mummy? Eh, you’ve seen literal tigers in the ring before Mac baby, that ain’t gonna faze you! "Wait, what? You're not even in this fight? Hoo-ee, the fans won’t be happy 'bout that..." = Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle(22 points, 4 voters, 0 firsts) ( Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle also wins the Best XCom Game With Rabbits In Award.) "I've not really got into X-Com-style strategy games, but I really enjoyed this. I maintain that the Rabbids are still funny. And Kirkhope does that song he does again."
"The surprise of the year for me. I wasnt expecting anything when this leaked but once i saw the Xcom style combat mixed with great writing and humour i was on board. A surprisingly hard game too which i like!"
"Always had high hopes for this and it delivered, there was plenty to consider strategy wise but it all comes together really well. Felt like it was paced really well too despite mentions of a difficulty spike and dare I say the Rabbids are actually quite funny."
"I wasn't alone in looking on at this with bemusement when the rumours starting flooding in about a Mario and Rabbids crossover game where Mario wields a gun. But that bemusement faded away after seeing the passion behind the project from the game's devs and then it was replaced by sheer enjoyment upon actually getting the game myself. There's a tricky strategy game in here buried under a cutesy Mario/Rabbids sheen and I've lapped up what the game has served my way so far. Nice one, Ubi."

The comments say it all. It's hard. Perhaps not spiky hard, but hard. For muggins 'ere, who likes to relax with a game at the end of the day, it sounded too hard. I never got far into World 2.
That may well be a shame. From what I did play, the game is downright charming, and - dare we admit it (we do, we did) - the Rabbids are pretty good. They've been compared to the intermittently amusing Minions, but from what I played, that's unfair. They make the Mario characters funny too, by association - even bland boy Mario, in a moment in that video I posted above.
Thinking about it, M+RKB pairs surprisingly well with its co-seventh placer. It's just as off the wall as ARMS, in its way. Who could have predicted at launch that the Switch's top ten would feature a 'proper' fighter and a hardcore strategy game? And yet, here we are. What a wonderful world we live in.

| Ah, pleasantly chuffed to see Rabbids there. I don't think I'm alone in wondering how carefully Ubisoft would handle Mario and his pals, but I knew the game was in safe hands after seeing how passionate the game director was at E3 during the game's official reveal. |
