The mini direct may have been disappointing for some but knowing both of these are coming in 2021 is great news. I've not played a mainline SMT game, just some of the spin off titles like something called Persona.
From the outside as a newer Atlus fan, SMT is darker in tone to its Persona counterparts from I am told which is fine by me.
Also, now with SMTIII going to be on Switch the whole mainline series is on Nintendo:
Shin Megami Tensei SNES/GBA/Nintendo Online Shin Megami Tensei II SNES/GBA Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster Switch Shin Megami Tensei IV 3DS Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse 3DS Shin Megami Tensei V Switch
I might be crazy but maybe Atlus should have a SMASH rep

I know nothing about the core SMTs apart from they have demons that look like genitalia. 'Darker' doesn't sound great for me, but I guess I'll keep an eye on these.

Persona also have those demons but as shadows instead.
I think because Persona is in high school and you hang out with your mates etc it comes over as lighter where I think SMT is more doom and gloom in terms of the whole world being taken over etc.
But these are huge announcements not quite but close to a Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy for Atlus as those are to Square Enix.

Its kind of a monster-battling RPG, right? I should give it a go . . .

From what I understand, the way you recruited Personas in P5 draws heavy inspiration from how you recruit demons in SMT. It's quite neat in that you've got to persuade the demon to join you. I've never played a mainline SMT game myself - I assume that this is a Final Fantasy situation where numbered titles feature new stories and characters and don't require having played the previous games in the series, yes?

That is correct or you have games like Shin Megami Tensei IV and Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse which Apocalypse is the sequel or the X-2, XIII-2 of SMTIV

I've not picked up III as it seems a lacklustre port more than anything.
Also been keen for V being brand new and shiny, think it had a good showing in the direct. I wouldn't be shocked if it goes under the radar of actually being the best game on Switch this year (hopefully not better than Lost Judgment) if Atlus are at the top of their game.

I think I zoned out during the Direct trailer of this. Combat didn't look thrilling, it must be said. It could definitely be one of my buys: depends how well it reviews I think.

I know this is a naughty thing to write to increase a post count, but: this game is like Kryptonite to me. Watch that trailer again; then imagine watching that with someone who doesn't normally have an interest in videogames in general, and attempt to explain what the hell it's talking about. You then fused with a guy in an alternate universe?

Not long till SMTV is out, I feel it's going under the radar a bit even though I still reckon it be one of the better reviewed games this year

So I picked up 3 hd on the cheap, started it today. About 3 hours in and although it definitely feels dated in places I must admit I am enthralled atm. Loving the combat (I love turn based so take that as you will) and I am already enjoying the demon fusing quite abit.
If you're new to SMT it's probably worth waiting for V but for £20 I'm enjoying this

This forum is Not Big on JRPGs, that's probably why.
I'm asking for it for Christmas. I'm a little bit antsy that it'll all be massively choice-based and I'll hate that, but it'll be a good big game to settle around the fire with.

Despite owning a bunch of them, I've never actually played an SMT game. Hoping to change that with this entry, though. I need to psych myself up to dig into an RPG at the best of times, but I feel like I've had a decent break from more involving games for a while now.

I think be more than then us than you think will give this a bash.
Just I meant the gaming landscape in general but has now been some more hands on previews.

I've tried a few SMTs and I did not enjoy my time with them, so that's why it's not paying attention. I've found them kind of inaccessible with some horrible difficulty spikes. I'll stick to Persona.

Horrible difficulty spikes often endear me to RPGs. I'm one of those freaks who loves grinding to become OP.

I am not endeared by difficulty spikes. I'm not endeared by gloomy over-serious tone either. The review I've seen (JUST THE ONE MUSS WE'RE STILL GOOD) said it was the best SMT's ever been though, so I'm willing to give it a bash. Add it to the pile of quality JRPGs I've played this year (if I enjoy this one I think it'll be the sixth?).
