I'm not sure how the level thing works - I always choose 1-1 so I haven't noticed if it's doing anything else. Maybe it's just your preference but then it chooses randomly, a la Mario Kart.

That sounds about right. I've always chosen random levels but always started on 1-1...
I've still got done better than 2nd. Although last time I played I had an additional foe...

That was a constant problem for me with Monster Hunter in my parents' house. The cats could hear the in-game cats and wanted to find them in the TV.

Aw! Pippin was also at the Direwolves in Dragon's Dogma the other day, which is at least co-op I guess! But he also hangs on to the top of the TV to see over in case they're there - now I'm paranoid a giant (expensive) telly is going to come crashing down on him when we're not looking...
