That's it.  I'm done.  I gave it a shot, but I'm done.

If you're reading this, you probably don't need me to tell you why in the end I never made it past Castle Kamoshida in Persona 5 Royal.  In case you need a refresher: the threat of making decisions that decide which content I miss, a pretty trad battle system, unappealing demon designs to a bloke who's firmly in the 'cute' camp when it comes to collectable beasts, an interminable first dungeon.  Those are all classic Persona facets that have dogged me (behave) throughout the whole series.  For this game in particular, Persona 5 bleeds "cool" and "sexy" but I don't really care for "cool" or "sexy" in games (or in real life - I know, you'd never think it); and several of the dungeon improvements turn it into more of a stealth-feeling game, and I don't care for stealth either.

Now, this is very much an 'it's not you, it's me' state of affairs.  I think this is a good game probably!  Although the battles are still trad, a combination of dynamic visuals and small additions raise them far above the quality of 3 and 4; the dungeons too.  I can appreciate from a distance the demon system and the social sim elements.  I think the dungeon length probably is a genuine flaw, although I can imagine it gets better once the game doesn't need to tutorialise everything.  I still think TMS #FE has the best dungeons in the Persona series.  I have some genuine gripes about the female character design too, more so since somebody posted these extracts from the Persona 5 artbook.  But for all that those are more egregious for being spelled out, Ann Takamaki's no worse than Xenoblade's Pyra.

No, the real reason for me giving up here is that I'm not a Persona (or Shin Megami Tensei) fan and I'm never going to be.  That's okay.  I've got Squeenix and MonolithSoft pumping out JRPGs I'm more attuned to, I'm fine with giving these a miss from now on.  Sorry Mas, but you're hardly lacking for fans of the series.

Speaking of stylish turn-based RPGs I don't have time for, I fell off the Thirsty Suitors wagon as well.  This feels like it should be more my deal: the battles have action commands to them, and the art is much less sexist.  And yet, Thirsty Suitors' elements don't hang together that well.  I enjoyed the battling but found the cooking average and the skateboarding tiresome, and they never feel like they're complimenting each other.  I found the main character's whining as unappealing as Takamaki's leather catsuit, just in a different way.  I felt like I could see the path of this game stretching out before me into solid 6/10 territory, without being as playable with my brain off.

This is definitely somebody's idea of a good time, especially at sale prices.  I'm just not that somebody.

You underestimate how little I apparently value my free time. Laughing

I'll mention here and not in last game finished, as I've now also done all three routes of Fates.

Now after finishing both Engage and Rev, I do think Engage is better that if I did rank 1-10 instead of tiers it be 1st Awakening, 2nd Three Houses, 3rd Three Hopes, 4th Engage, 5th Revelation, 6th Conquest & 7th Birthright, 8th Warriors, 9th Heroes, 10th ???

So I do need to get around to a 10th then, not sure if I'll jump right into Echoes as my what I'm playing on 3DS game as kinda want something different or wait till Fire Emblem (The Blazing Blade) is added to GBA NSO+, or I guess TMS #FE.

As a big fan of Muramasa I'd probably enjoy Odin Sphere, but unless it comes to Switch I'll probably live fine without it - much like Mas will live fine without WEC. For Cris Tales, I thought it was heavily choice-based: is that not the case?

I don't have time for people who say they hate anime. That's like saying you hate reading books or listening to music or playing videogames. There are too many types of anime to hate them all, blanket, from an informed place: Studio Ghibli != Akira != Neon Genesis Evangelion != FullMetal Alchemist, for example. However, I do get that there are some tropes that appear more often than they should in anime, and so I think I know what people mean when they say they hate anime.

They mean Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE.

This is the most anime game ever to anime, and eventually that got the better of me. The tropes are all present and correct: cast of high-schoolers save the world, male hero with no personality, over-enthusiastic best friend, childhood friend sweetheart who's endearingly* awkward and awkwardly busty, ice maiden with a heart of gold, flirty older woman with too much jiggling... It even leverages Fire Emblem characters to turn Tiki into the loli-bait who warbles 'onii-chan' every five bloody seconds. That's before you get into combining it with idol culture, all of which I find beyond creepy. Oh and there's one coloured person... he's a photographer who I think was taking gravure shots in the original version. Sick

I liked the enemy and dungeon designs, and I tolerated the battle system (basic turn-based with a twist), but the writing and characters were bad and made me feel uneasy. Nope.

There's already a sequel! Can't believe it hasn't been ported to Switch and Lumines has.

I've gone back to Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. It is the most anime anime that has ever animed, and while I do like a fair few anime I don't mean that in a good way. The writing and characterisation are so clichéd that I think my eyes are growing to half the size of my head through playing it. Still, the dungeoneering is fun enough, and hopefully it'll tide me over until a better game comes out next week.

...well come on then Mas.

Anyway, with another year having passed, I thought that once again it'd be nice to have a look at how my top ten had changed - for me anyway, maybe some of you will get a kick out of it? Tongue Boldface is new this year, natch.

Last year at this time, I said I couldn't see anything I was looking forward to in 2020, apart from maybe Murder by Numbers.  That's pretty much reflected in the movements in my top ten (MbN is hovering just outside): two lesser-known gems, and a straight replacement for Jackbox 3.  This is the first year no big Nintendo game has made my top ten (although 2019's big Nintendo entry was kicked out).  The real negative story, though, is that hardly any of you sods talked about What The Golf? this year. DAMN YOU!

My top 25 tells a pretty similar story.

Balla's top 25:

That's five-and-a-half new games from 2020 and four others.  I should say that overall this is a cracking games list for a console, and the Switch feels like it has another couple of years on it!  For all my moaning, the Switch remains a belting machine.  That, however, is mostly due to the strength of the eShop: 16 games here are indies (not including Sakuna which feels somewhere in between).  And yes yes, I know, games is games; but that does explain why I feel like I'm missing the big worlds that indie developers normally just don't have the budget to create, despite the many great titles above.  It doesn’t look immediately like that situation is going to change in 2021 either.

Finally, I know this post is already long; but two years ago I reviewed (almost) every Switch game I'd played, in the style of Buska, and I thought I'd go through the rest of my list.  (~ signifies an update on a game I talked about last time.)  Read on for my ill-informed views on games I've barely tried, as well as the odd emphatic recommendation...

Every Switch game I played in the last 2 years:

I'm keen to read similar lists to any of the above from y'all if you fancy!

I was all ready to chuck Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE on the scrap heap when I picked it up for one final shot a while ago.  After a while wandering around a dull version of Tokyo, fighting through a really formulaic dungeon, and being confronted by some ridiculous chests, I'd come to the conclusion that this game was too anime for me.  Then I reached the second dungeon, which is a creepy alternate-universe shopfront with a giant gothic lolita dress as the main obstacle, and I actually started to enjoy it.  I liked the dungeon design, and I liked the ridiculous enemies - there's a spooky clown called 'Nickelwise'. 🤡

I'm not sure the battling is ever going to be too special, I'm still going to find the character designs and outfits a bit Neutral , and the plot requires a suspension of disbelief that the game hasn't been good enough to deserve; but buoyed by this surprising upturn, I'm giving it another go.
